Cahaba Students Dive into Earth Science Unit
The unit of Earth Science has served as a springboard for cross-curricular activities for 4th grade students at Cahaba Elementary School. Math classes have spent time graphing coordinates of volcanoes around the globe to further understand plate tectonics and learn about the “Ring of Fire”. In Science, students have learned about the various plate boundary movements in an activity where Oreo cookies represented the earth’s crust. In reading, students have completed a non-fiction unit of study on geology, exploring continental drift, earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, mountains, rocks, and oceans. Students also became experts on these topics and developed research presentations using technical vocabulary. This was a project to culminate all geology-based activities and experiences that students learned about during this non-fiction unit. One student said, “It helped me understand the vocabulary words because I was learning about words in science and in reading. It just made more sense and helped me better understand everything.”

Magnolia's Student Leadership Team's Visit to Peachtree
Magnolia's Student Leadership Team recently visited their "Grandpals", residents of Peachtree Senior Living Community. Under the leadership of Dr. Phyllis Faust, principal, and Mrs. Lauren Blake, school counselor, Student Leadership Team members met with their "Grandpals", played card games, created snowman crafts, and enjoyed talking together. Also accompanying the team to serve were Fran Box, Exceptional Education Teacher; Stephen Shelton, Bus Driver; and Rebecca Bishop, School Librarian. Prior to the visit, Student Leadership Team members made beautiful snowflakes during their meetings with Mrs. Blake and presented these snowflakes to the residents of Peachtree.
Mrs. Findley's students at Paine Elementary learned about Dr. Mae Jemison, followed by making paper rockets. They practiced launching their rockets with wind power and measured how far they traveled using measuring tapes.
