The Little Mermaid
Update From Nurse Decker-Gendron
As most of you are aware, tick season is upon us. New Hampshire is a high tick-related
disease state. Unfortunately, the habitat in NH, as well as the woods surrounding the
playground at CES, are prime breeding grounds for ticks. June is a peak month for visiting the
emergency room for tick bites. Please help us provide an added level of protection for your
children by ensuring the following:
● Apply insect repellent on your children before they arrive at school. Repellent with
20-30% DEET is safe for children to have on their skin.
● Provide your student with a hat to wear while outside at school. Ticks love warm and
hard to find places like the scalp, hairline and ears!
● Encourage your child to wash their hair and take a bath/shower every night. This is
often when ticks are discovered.
● Perform regular tick checks after your child has been outside.
Other tips:
● Permethrin, an insecticide, can be applied to clothing. Once dry, it is safe and can
provide an added layer of protection against ticks.
● When removing ticks, be sure to use tweezers or a tick spoon and grab the tick by its
head. Pull straight up so that the head and body are both removed. Dispose of the tick
immediately.
● Dry clothes in the dryer on high for ten minutes to kill any attached ticks.
● Call your child’s doctor immediately if your child:
○ develops a rash and complains of any unusual symptoms such as headache,
joint/muscle aches, and fatigue.
○ has a tick that has been attached to the skin for > 72 hours and appears
engorged

Memorial Day Program
Field Day is Coming! - Update from Mr. McWhinnie
Thursday June 5th from 8:45 - 11:35 AM (with a rain date of June 12th)
Field day is not just a fun day; it is the culminating event of weeks of physical education training and practice for our students. Although there is an element of competition, emphasis is on having fun, individual effort and doing your own personal best. As in all aspects of life, however, it is a learning process for children to realize and cope with the reality that only one person comes in first place, one in second place, etc. We all have strengths and challenges. Field day gives some children the opportunity to be recognized for physical abilities and for others to set goals to work on for the next year. Participation and fun is everyone's reward on field day!
Health & Safety Considerations
All students must wear sneakers and socks. Please send a sport water bottle filled with water with your child. Please have your student wear their orange field day t-shirt and athletic clothing instead of skirts and dresses. Students may wear hats and sunglasses for protection from the sun. Please apply sunscreen and/or bug spray to your child before school.
Please email Mr. McWhinnie at ymcwhinnie@sau80.org if you have any questions about field day!

One Room Schoolhouse Visits
All CES learners have taken part in the one-room schoolhouse program. With each visit, about 20 students from first grade to the fourth grade visited the school, allowing them to experience part of one day set in the year 1938. Original desks, chalkboards and memorabilia helped to make this experience as authentic as possible. Students engaged in several activities, such as journaling, singing patriotic songs, penmanship practice, learning about Roman Numerals, Canterbury maps and using yarn to make a keepsake toy. Kindergarten enjoyed a separate visit to the schoolhouse, taking part in activities such as using chalk slates, drawing, and playing marbles. Thank you to Mrs. Gingrich for your hard work in coordinating this program. Also, thank you to The Canterbury Historical Society for sponsoring the program and supporting us.
Student Art Month
Several CES students created artwork that was chosen for its excellence by the New Hampshire Art Educators Association. Their artwork will be featured in a digital movie that will be displayed on the Jumbotron at an upcoming Fisher Cats baseball game! This is all part of the NH Student Art Month celebration, and we are so proud of each of them! Thank you to CES art teacher Mrs. McGill for coordinating and submitting each of their artwork for recognition.
