Dear Parent/Guardian,
The end of the school year requires some housekeeping tasks throughout the school. The health room is no exception.
An adult will be required to pick up any medications that your child may have in the health room. Medications should be picked up by noon on May 23, 2024. Any medications left at school will be destroyed after 12pm on May 23th unless specific arrangements have been made with the Nurse.
When your child returns to school in August a new medication form with parent and physician signature will be required for any prescription medications needing to be given during the school day. All over the counter medications will need an authorization form signed by the parent. One form will be required for each medication brought to school for the 2023-2024 school year.
If you have any questions please contact me at 205-439-2930.
Have a safe and happy summer☺

We are having a later celebration of Cinco de Mayo with fun songs and instruments. We are also still learning all about the ocean and the beach. We are focusing on seahorses and used our ELA skills to respond and comment to the Eric Carle book, Mrs. Seahorse. We created a seahorse craft by using fine motor skills to squish paint. This was a fun sensory experience, too. We also played a game of "Go Fish" with a fishing pole and magnetic fish. This was a great math skills activity. We finished with participating in field day and our last house meeting of the year.
--PRE-K
During the first full week of May, we will be flying to new heights by having a study on birds. Our class has taken notice of the various birds they see outside our school. We will be learning about various types of birds, what they eat, and how they live. As we study birds, we will learn concepts and skills in literacy, math, science, social studies, the arts, and technology. We’ll also use thinking skills to investigate, ask questions, solve problems, and test our ideas.
KINDERGARTEN
FIRST GRADE
This week in first grade, we began our last unit of Benchmark: Exploring Sound, Light, and Heat. In this unit, we will determine text importance and use illustrations to describe details. In math, we had so much fun rotating classrooms to learn about shapes, money, and time! In science, we have started to work on our first grade time capsules! In writing, we have been investigating and writing 'how to' text! Thank you for sending your child a snack and water bottle daily!
SECOND GRADE
Tomorrow is field day! We are looking forward to an exciting day of sportsmanship. Our students work so well together to accomplish many goals. Water bottles may be brought to the event just please have your child’s name written on the bottle. Sunscreen may be worn since we will be outside in the sunshine (depending on the weather), but it will need to be applied before arriving at school. Looking forward to a great day!
THIRD GRADE
The third graders had a BLAST at the RRES Spring Fling! A HUGE Thank you to all of the volunteers that helped make the night a HUGE success! This week, we continued to work on learning and practicing our cursive handwriting. In spelling, our skill is learning to spell soft and hard c words. We are looking forward to Friday's Field Day and our last House Meeting of the school year.
FOURTH GRADE
We are in the last few weeks of this school year! We know summer is right around the corner but let's finish this year strong! This week, we will begin our iReady reading and Math Diagnostics. This will be the very last one the students take this year! In math, students are working on geometry. In Reading they are learning about different communities and how communities evolve over time. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's homeroom teacher. Have a great week!
FIFTH GRADE
The colonists are very upset with the Intolerable Acts! Colonists have had enough and will meet at the First Continental Congress! In Reading, we are continuing lessons related to American history and reviewing reading strategies learned early in the year. This week students will review previously learned math skills. We will solve one or two students Estimysteries each day. We will also be using all that we have learned this year in math to make a 5th Grade Level Math Board Game! This is a project that will be completed at school but students may work on it at home if they wish. This Project is due Monday, May 13th. We will begin a great engineering unit where students will be aerospace engineers and work with a team on a design challenge!
Rising 6th Grade Information
Berry Middle School rising 6th grade transition events:
We are very excited about welcoming our upcoming 6th grade class (The Class of 2031) and we know they are excited to learn about Berry Middle School.
We have two events planned that we hope will help you and your student learn about and prepare for middle school.
First, we are planning an elective showcase on Monday, April 22, 2024, 6:00 p.m. at Berry Middle School. This event is for all parents and students who will be attending Berry Middle School next year. The night will feature the Berry Band and Choir. In addition, the evening will include an opportunity for each rising grade level to hear a presentation from their upcoming grade level counselor and principal about course selection and the year ahead.
Then, on Tuesday, May 14 (RES and SMES) and Wednesday, May 15 (GES and RRES), our rising 6th graders will visit Berry with their elementary school. The morning will include a welcome from Mrs. Culpepper, the 6th grade principal, information from our counselors, performances by Berry’s Band, Choir and Theatre department, and a tour of the school. Please be on the lookout for more information about this event from your elementary school.
Our hope is the timing of these events will allow you and your student(s) to enjoy their remaining days of elementary school. We look forward to welcoming you and your student(s) to the Berry Middle School Jaguar family and the 2024 - 2025 school year.
Go Jags!

Vaccinations Information
Please Read Important Information Regarding Head Lice!
Parents/Guardians
Head lice often cause unnecessary absenteeism from school for students each year. When students are sent home with head lice, not only do they miss school, but parents must often miss work to treat their child and clean their home. Head lice outbreaks are costly for everyone.
More information regarding head lice can be found by clicking this link. https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head/gen_info/faqs.html
Please help us do a better job of controlling head lice by:
Teaching your child not to share combs, brushes, caps, etc.
Checking your child for head lice and/or nits once each week. If you find lice or nits, treat at once with a lice-killing product and manually remove the nits. You may wish to consult your physician for special circumstances or instruction.
Notifying the school nurse if your child has evidence of head lice or nits or if their head has been unusually itchy.
To check your child, start at the back of the head at the hairline and slowly part small sections of hair while looking closely for small pearly eggs (nits) attached to the hair near the scalp. The eggs are not easy to remove and do not flick off like dandruff.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping us address this problem. It is our goal to keep your child healthy and attending school. If you have questions or concerns, please contact our school nurse, Mrs. Hadaway at 205-439-2930 or by email at ehadaway@hoover.k12.al.us

Special Occasion Treat Suggestions
All the items we sell in the cafeteria are ‘Smart Snack’ approved. Parents will often purchase treats for their child’s birthday celebration through our CNP Department during lunch service. This often consists of low-fat ice-cream and/or baked chips.
What NOT to bring for a Snack/Celebration
Please do not send candy, cake, cookies, soda, donuts, cupcakes or regular chips for snack. These are foods of minimal nutritional value (FMNV) and can have a negative influence on children’s health and behavior. Effective, July 1st , 2014, every snack that you bring in for your child must meet the ‘Smart Snacks’ criteria. See link for product calculator in the Resource section below to help determine if your snack is approved. Feel free to call the CNP Department at 205-439-1062 if you have any questions.
