Principal's Weekly Communication -Week of February 22
PBIS
Our PBIS Team has completed the following tasks set forth from the beginning of the year checklist shared with staff:
- Develop a purpose statement
- Establish a monthly PBIS Leadership team and meet schedule for the school year
- Define Staff vs Administrator managed behaviors (Define them)
- Develop behavior Matrix
We are currently working on:
- Developing PBIS Flowchart
- Developing plans and procedures for encouraging and discouraging behaviors.
Updates from our District PBIS Team: The District team organized for reps at each building to attend a Universal Tier 1 training. Marny and Guy will be attending for our building. The team is also working on a district wide implementation plan for the 2016-2017 school year.
School Improvement Planning Through Rising Star
Our focus of differentiation will be on three tiers of an assignments during Core Instruction. We are using one task to tier for this school year and utilizing March and April staff meetings to share out and reflect on the tier activity. Collaborating with our colleagues will help us all have a big picture of what is going on across the building and give each other ideas to implement in the classroom.
Prerequisite
- Figure out ways to further scaffold the task within the standard so that students who may struggle with the task can be successful. Double check to make sure that you have not watered down the task.
Target
- Figure out ways to scaffold the task within the standard so that students at or near grade level can be successful with the task.
Enhanced
- Think about the most advanced student you have. Design an activity within the standard that would stretch this student.
Our second opportunity for differentiation is occurring in SMART Time
Educator Quality: ID13 Instructional teams meet for blocks of time sufficient to develop and refine units of instruction and review student learning data.
Teaching and Learning: IIB04 Teachers differentiate instruction based on assessment results to provide support for some students and enhance learning opportunities for others.
How Do I Fit It All In During Literacy Time?
Many of you have said you were not sure how to fit everything into Literacy? I encourage all of you to review this plan and reflect on your current literacy plan to see how this aligns to what you are doing. Jenni A. is willing to collaborate with you to help support you through this to make it a reality if you are identifying this as a need.
- I love and admire Joy Burney, Anita, and Mary for their help in getting the kindergarten train cars ready. Thanks ladies!
Love my third grade team and how everyone works so well together and is there for one another
Love Kellie, Claudia and Lisa for making the cafeteria such a happy place to be
I am grateful to Lori Maxwell for all the work she has put into piloting and evaluating math programs the past year and a half, being a pioneer with Math Expressions, and being so reflective about the way students are responding to it. I know she will help us muddle through this new program next year with amazing organizational skills, an infectious laugh and probably some chocolate. (JM)
I admire Kathy Barklow for taking on the colossal task of designing the original Units of Study for second grade. It took her away from her students and family. The vision was sometimes cloudy, often too many cooks in the kitchen, and the critics were not always kind. She should be truly proud of the result-a thoughtful curriculum that blends best practice, balanced and quality literature with rigorous and consistent expectations. I am excited to learn what she has learned about PBIS.(JM)
I appreciate Karen Barkley for her work to hone, revise and organize the Units of Study to maximize student learning and teacher sanity. She has also committed time away from her own students over the past several years, collaborating with building and district colleagues on continued school improvement efforts as part of Rising Star. I know Husmann is well represented and reflected by this advocate for balance, reason and positive experiences for every learner. (JM)
Tina Serra and Jenny Massie are ROCK STARS for donating to my new classroom. They both went above and beyond what needed to be done. Thank you to both of you for your continued support!! ~ Kerri Tilton
Kristin Z., Karen Belke, Selena, Sarah and Katie all rock for dropping whatever they are doing to help students in need. Behaviors can explode out of nowhere and these ladies are always ready to grab a radio and be part of the support team to help our students process through their crisis. Way to go! You never forget to be awesome!
Ann Aiello rocks for sitting at my desk on Thursday when I had to go home sick.
Cathy Thurston rocks for being so welcoming and making my transition back to work easier. She has updated me on all the things that I have missed. It's been great coming back to work with a friend and awesome teammate!
