A Note from Dr. Neubeck
It's Time To Vote
As we approach Election Day this Tuesday, November 5th, we’re reminded of the significance of each vote, with important decisions ahead for our country, our state, our community, and our school district. Last week, Mayor Glassmaker joined our students at City Hall to discuss the impact of voting. Students learned how the process works and how each vote truly counts—thank you, Mayor Glassmaker, for this valuable lesson!
Now it’s our turn as adults to cast our votes. I want to thank each of you who has taken the time to attend town hall meetings, school board forums, or to watch videos to become informed. Our votes won’t change the past but will shape our future, affecting every level of our community.
Regarding Byron Public Schools, I want to acknowledge that mistakes were made and we have learned from past challenges. Over the last several months, we have implemented many new processes to improve efficiency, accountability, and transparency.
Just this week, I joined over 25 district leaders at a workshop in Rochester with the Minnesota Association of School Administrators, where we shared strategies to address budget and funding challenges. This meeting was one of eight meetings around the State of Minnesota. Many Minnesota districts are facing similar pressures and are forced to explore solutions like operating levies to meet their funding challenges.
Byron Public Schools has had three operating levies over the past 30 years, the last in 2017. For a long time, steady enrollment growth helped sustain our budget, allowing us to make the most of our resources. This year, however, we saw only a modest increase of 12 students, which is not enough to offset rising costs, and this trend is predicted to continue for the next several years. While we’re grateful for past referendums for the facilities we’ve built together, this referendum is essential to maintain the educational programming that our students and staff deserve.
I encourage everyone to make their voices heard this Tuesday. Thank you for your support of our students, our staff, and the future of Byron Public Schools.
Go Bears!
