The eLeader
The official digital newsletter of La Porte ISD
Greetings, La Porte ISD Family. Today is a great day to be a Bulldog!
I hope everyone is enjoying this extended weekend and getting plenty of rest and relaxation. This is a busy time of year in athletics, fine and performing arts and academics (as we prepare for STAAR), and a few extra hours of sleep and time at home can work wonders.
As we move forward, I want everyone to know that our teachers have received a lot of professional development this school year, including this past Friday, to help them hone their skills. This training not only makes our teachers better at what they do, but it ultimately results in our students achieving higher academic success. Many people do not know this, but when our teachers come in on a student holiday, they often spend their days in classroom sessions, learning from educational experts, to help them become better at what they do.
I am deeply grateful to our team of educators for their unwavering dedication to nurturing an enriched learning environment and elevating the success of our students in La Porte ISD.
Superintendent Shout-outs
- We have some fantastic spellers in La Porte ISD, and I want to offer my congratulations to all of the district competitors and to the students who made their way through almost three hours of competition to win the 2024 District Spelling Bee.
- A big shout-out goes to our Lady Dawgs Basketball Team who won the Bi-District Championship once again and qualified for the UIL Area playoffs. We are proud of Coach Elisha Thompson and all of the student-athletes.
- Our Bulldogs Basketball Team, under new Head coach Anthony Stephens, also deserves kudos as they too have qualified for the postseason. The Bulldogs play Port Arthur Memorial on Tuesday in the UIL Bi-District Playoffs.
- Congratulations to our stellar American Sign Language students for competing and gaining top-five honors in their meet this past weekend against many of the finest ASL students from across the Houston area.
- We honored our School Resource Officers this past week during School Resource Officers Appreciation Day, and I want to give all of them another shout-out for keeping us safe every day.
Spring Break is only weeks away, and I want to encourage everyone to stay the course and keep the main thing the main thing. I look forward to celebrating much more student excellence as we navigate our way through the remainder of the school year.
I wish everyone a great week, and I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.
With La Porte pride,
Walter Jackson, Ed.D.

College Park student wins annual spelling bee
A College Park Elementary School fifth-grade student won first place in the 2024 La Porte ISD Spelling Bee on Thursday by correctly spelling the word "rancid."
After almost three hours of spelling competition among 30 La Porte ISD students, Andres Lozoya was the last speller standing to clinch the annual contest.
Banreet Kaur, a fifth grader Bayshore Elementary School and Amirah Mehlhouse, a Leo A. Rizzuto Elementary School fourth-grade student, placed second and third, respectively.
With the win, Lozoya has qualified for the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee, which will be held in March.
ASL students shine in greater Houston competition
Two American Sign Language students this weekend placed near the top in the Farrington Foregin Language competition, hosted by Houston Area Teacher of Languages. Francesco Bitteto and Phoenix Lopez-Myers placed second and fifth, respectively. In total, eight La Porte ISD students participated in the contest. David Duvall is their ASL teacher.

Bulldogs in Bi-District Playoffs on Tuesday
Let's go Bulldogs!
LP Bond 2023
Stadium/Development Center
Weather has been cooperative, and that has allowed progress to continue at the site of Bulldog Stadium. The home side is well under construction, and the foundation is beginning at the Development Center. Crews plan to begin pouring concrete for home side the concourse in the next couple weeks.
New buses begin arriving
One of the new school buses arrived this past week. Additional buses should begin to arrive in the next few weeks. Bus replacement was a part of LP Bond 23, which allows the district to remain on a regular schedule of replacing buses that are aged and in disrepair.

Professional development takes place across district on student holiday
Last Friday was a holiday for students, but staff members were busy improving their skillsets. Instructional staff members concentrated on STAAR 2.0, while test administrators learned about properly administering STAAR Alt.; Campus administrators worked with Region 4 on T-Tess domains; and instructional paraprofessionals heard from HR Executive Director Angie Viator on “Building Your Toolbox.” At the elementary schools, meanwhile, it was a parent/teacher conference day. All campus instructional staff members will have a three-day weekend, with Monday being Presidents Day.
