KILGOUR 3RD GRADERS IN PARK/ROBERS WIN BACK-TO-BACK MARKET MADNESS CHAMPIONSHIPS
The StEP program, which stands for student enterprise program, is an elementary program with school currency for positive behaviors such as completing homework on time, arriving at school on time, showing academic achievement, and good behavior. The Center provides an on-site school store four times per year, where students have the opportunity to purchase school supplies and novelty items. They can also choose to save their money each quarter and earn interest, or donate to the Ronald McDonald House.
For Market Madness, students switch roles from consumers to producers. Each classroom decides on the type of business venture it wants to create. Students complete job applications and interview for positions within the business. The annual finale event, Market Madness, draws approximately 1,000 students to the UC campus to showcase their classroom businesses. This unique and fun marketplace provides an opportunity for our young entrepreneurs to sell and buy their custom-made products.
The Park/Robers team created a combined classroom business, The Bops. Students decided on a product and marketing strategies. The students created a product called Boppables which are bubbles that let the fun never stop! Prior to creating their product and marketing/advertising, students interviewed for various leadership roles for the company. Workers then produced 600 of these products to sell to other peers at Market Madness. The Bops won the award for Best Marketing and were so very excited! The students worked hard, and their hard work paid off. They won an award as well as a pizza party!
