MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Greetings MVCSD Community,
This week, we celebrated our hometown hero, Rai Benjamin, for his outstanding accomplishment of two gold medals at the Paris Olympics. Rai now has brought three gold medals and one silver back to Mount Vernon from his two trips to the Olympics. He has made his entire city so proud. He was awarded for his efforts with a well-deserved spot on the MVHS Hall of Fame, a renaming of the MVHS track to Rai Benjamin track and the Rai Benjamin Plaza at Memorial Field. Now, Mount Vernon students and the community will always have these tokens to commemorate his achievements.
I led the District through two moments of silence on Wednesday at 8:46 a.m. and 9:03 a.m. to remember and honor the victims and first responders from September 11, 2001. From Mount Vernon, we lost Sandra Campbell, Katie McCloskey, Rochelle Snell, Michael Boccardi and Jonathan Briley to the tragedy, and we honored them as well. We will never forget the lives lost and the heroes from that day. As educators, we are working to ensure that future generations remember as well. Classes throughout the District, such as Mr. Reynolds social studies class at Lincoln School, learned about 9/11 and the impacts it made on our society and community.
Next Thursday, September 19, 2024, the District will host Dad’s Take Your Child to School Day for pre-K to eighth grade students. If you are a father, grandfather or father figure in one of our students' lives, you are invited to come to school with them! Parental involvement is so important to a child’s academic, social and emotional wellbeing, so we encourage you to participate and show your child that you are right by their side. We are looking forward to seeing all our engaged parents coming into our schools next week!
There will be voting registration events at our high schools until Tuesday, October 15, 2024. View the story below to find the times and locations and get registered to vote!
Kindest Regards,
Dr. K. Veronica Smith
Acting Superintendent of Schools
