New Leadership Selected for Success Academy
Donte Tichenor has been selected as the next principal for the Success Academy. With more than 15 years of experience in education and service to Fayette County Public Schools, Tichenor has served as principal at Booker T. Washington Elementary since 2020. He will begin his new role on July 1.
"Donte’s exceptional leadership at Booker T. Washington Elementary, marked by his adept implementation of curriculum enhancements and instructional programs, resulted in tangible student achievement,” said Superintendent Demetrus Liggins. “His visionary approach makes him the ideal candidate to lead Success Academy forward into a future defined by innovation, opportunity, and academic success.”
Tichenor joined FCPS in 2009 and served in various roles including substitute teacher, paraeducator, and social studies teacher at Lexington Traditional Magnet School. Before becoming principal at Booker T. Washington, he held various leadership roles including academy principal and administrative dean for Bryan Station High School, where he was also selected to lead the Information Technology Academy. Formerly, Tichenor served as dean of students and behavior coach and interventionist at The Learning Center.
Farwell from Dr. Janice Wyatt-Ross
Dear Students and Families of Success Academy,
It is with a bittersweet mix of emotions that I write to inform you of my decision to resign from my position at the end of this school year. Serving as a member of the Success Academy community has been an incredible journey filled with cherished memories, meaningful connections, and profound growth.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for the unwavering support, dedication, and enthusiasm you have shown throughout my time here. Your passion for learning and commitment to excellence have inspired me beyond measure, and it has been an honor to be a part of your educational journey.
As I reflect on my time at Success Academy, I am filled with immense pride for all that we have accomplished together. From the countless achievements in academics, arts, and community service to the countless moments of kindness, collaboration, and camaraderie, it is clear that our community is truly exceptional.
However, there comes a time in life when we must embrace change and allow new opportunities to flourish. While I will deeply miss being a part of the day-to-day life at Success Academy, I am confident that this decision will pave the way for the continued growth and advancement of our school community.
Please know that even though I may not be physically present within these walls, my heart will always remain with each and every one of you. I am just a phone call or email away, and I am always here to offer support, guidance, or simply a listening ear whenever you may need it.
As I prepare to embark on the next chapter of my journey, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation for the privilege of serving as the Principal of Success Academy. The memories we have created together will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I will carry them with me wherever I go.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the love, laughter, and learning that we have shared. I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of your lives, and I wish you all nothing but the very best as you continue to strive for excellence and pursue your dreams.
With warmest regards and fondest wishes,
Dr. Janice Wyatt-Ross
Inclement Weather Procedures
When Fayette County experiences wintry weather, a team of district employees monitors the weather conditions along with meteorologists and the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Streets and Roads Division. They consider the roads, precipitation, outdoor temperatures, wind chills, current conditions, and the forecast in making a recommendation to the superintendent.
Severe weather or poor road conditions can result in an NTI weather day, a one- or two-hour delay to the start of school, an early dismissal, or cancellation of school. During the 2023-24 school year, Fayette County Public Schools will use Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) instead of school closings whenever feasible. NTI will allow students to continue learning when weather conditions make it unsafe to attend school in person. An NTI weather day counts as a school day since students participate in learning at home. With NTI, there is no need to make up or add a day to the academic calendar. In the event of a sustained weather event or state of emergency, detailed information will be communicated in response to specific conditions at the time.
NTI Weather Day Students: Students will use their district-issued devices or other materials to complete activities outlined by their teacher(s) in Canvas or Google Classroom. Synchronous learning will not take place; however, NTI contingency plans on IEPs must be implemented. Teachers are expected to offer virtual office hours at predetermined times.
Our Success Academy Inclement Weather Plan is embedded below.
Title 1
What is Title I, Part A?
Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended (ESEA) provides financial assistance to Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) and schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards.
Fayette County Public Schools serves all schools and programs that qualify with a free/reduced lunch percentage above 50% on the second Tuesday in January. Each qualifying school and program will receive a Title I allocation for the following school year.
Schools and programs in FCPS receive Title I funds in order to implement a schoolwide program (SWP) model.

Success Academy admits students in a cohort system, as space permits. Groups of students are admitted as follows:
July, August, September, October, January, February, and March (as space permits).
Admissions Criteria:
- Students must be between the ages of 16-21
- Students must be 16 when submitting an application
- Students are behind their same age peers in earning credits toward high school graduation
- Have no pattern of disruptive behavior.
We also serve:

Virtual Learning Center
Success Academy is an application only program. Students who are interested in attending the virtual program must submit an online application.
Our virtual program is open to middle or high school student who reside in Fayette County. The application period for this year has closed, however, those who desire to apply for the current school year may submit a late application. Placement for this year is not guaranteed. Students will be placed on a waiting list and staff will communicate with families should an opening occur.
Our students are typically:
- Students who struggle with anxiety and focus much better learning from home in their own environment. They attend regular google meets and enjoy looping with their teachers.
- Students who are professional performers and can not participate in a brick and mortar school. They attend regular meetings and the school events throughout the year while having the ability to act, sing, etc., in a professional capacity.
- Students who prefer to learn at their own pace for various reasons (they have a job, wanting to work on their own, etc.). They participate in canvas and occasionally on google meets.
- Current A1 Athletes who are hoping to attend a D1 school. These students find it easier to work with in a smaller school environment and attend google meets. These students typically workout in the morning with the A1 team then join their teachers on google meets. These students need to extra flexibility in their schedules.
- Students who have been the victim of bullying and need to feel safe. The virtual environment gives them the chance to focus on their school work without fear. They are usually students who were very successful in school but when the bullying started, their grades began to suffer.
For further information regarding the application and enrollment process please contact Dr. April Clement by phone at (859) 381-3795 or by email at april.clement@fayette.kyschools.us

Mission Statement
The mission of this program is to graduate and transition every student with the skills to succeed in the classroom, workforce, and community through a nontraditional; personalized pathway.
Our Mascot
Our Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) expectations are to instill in our students that they must persist, persevere, and progress. Those three P’s are the foundation of our school program. Though some students have gotten off track, they must persist, they may have set backs they must persevere, persisting and persevering will produce progress. These characteristics are part of why the eagle is such a revered bird. The Golden Eagle is a prime example of persisting and persevering.
Golden Eagles are very agile in flight and they can remain in the air for hours. They have a graceful, soaring flight with their wingtips being slightly upturned. They can fly at altitudes where no other bird can fly. This powerful eagle is North America's largest bird of prey and the national bird of Mexico. These birds are dark brown, with lighter golden-brown plumage on their heads and necks. They are extremely swift, and can dive upon their quarry at speeds of more than 150 miles per hour.
Golden Eagles (and its feathers) are highly respected and considered sacred within American Indigenous traditions, culture and religion. They are honored with great care and shown the deepest respect. They represent honesty, truth, majesty, strength, courage, wisdom, power and freedom.
Powerful lessons from the eagle:
- Eagles are not afraid to fly alone
- Eagles have excellent vision and concentration
- Eagles love the storm
- The eagle tests the level of commitment before engagement.
- The eagle is a master of change management.
- Rebirth involves death of the old-self

Online Learning Platforms
We are excited to announce that an important improvement to our online learning program has been made. After careful consideration and evaluation, FCPS decided to switch our online platform from Edgenuity to Edmentum, a leading provider of educational technology solutions.
This transition to Edmentum will bring several advantages to our students, teachers, and the entire school community. Edmentum offers a more user-friendly interface, enhanced interactive features, and a wider range of educational resources to enrich your child's learning experience. We firmly believe that this change will enable us to better cater to individual learning needs and create a more engaging and productive virtual classroom environment.
Starting August 16, 2023, all academic activities, assignments, and assessments will be hosted on the Edmentum platform. To ensure a seamless transition, we have scheduled training sessions for our teaching staff to become familiar with the new platform and its functionalities.
What to expect:
Login Information: In the coming days, we will provide you with the necessary login credentials and instructions to access the Edmentum platform.
Training Resources: We will share resources and guides to help you and your child navigate through Edmentum efficiently.
Support: Our dedicated technical support team will be available to assist with any technical issues or questions you may encounter during the transition.
We understand that adapting to a new platform may require some adjustment, and we are committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for everyone involved. Please know that we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing the best possible education for your child, whether in-person or through online means.
If you have any immediate questions or concerns regarding the switch to Edmentum, please don't hesitate to reach out to our school administration or contact our support team at (859) 381-3795.
Thank you for your continued support and collaboration as we strive to enhance our students' learning experience.

Secondary schools and programs (grades 6–12) use Canvas as their learning management system (LMS) or online classroom space. Teachers communicate information about class instruction and assignments through this platform. Students can access this space using their district email and password. Look for the link to Canvas in the “waffle” after students log in to their Google Drive. In addition, families can monitor their student’s progress using the Canvas Parent App for mobile devices.

Student Code of Conduct
In the Fayette County Public Schools, we are committed to teaching the whole child and we recognize that academic and social-emotional success go hand in hand. Ensuring a safe and respectful learning environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued begins with setting explicit expectations for how we will treat one another at school.
Just as teachers set clear classroom expectations for student learning, the Fayette County Board of Education has adopted policies to set districtwide expectations. The purpose of the Student Code of Conduct is to communicate all the district policies related to student behavior in a single document. Developed with the input of students, families, teachers, and administrators, the guidelines follow law and policy, communicate the high standards we have for students, explain the process that staff members follow when issues occur, and outline consequences for misbehavior.
For the first time this year, the Student Code of Conduct is moving to an electronic format. This shift was based on the work of students in the Go Green Club at Henry Clay High School, who surveyed students across our district about how they use the document. To ensure everyone has access, the Student Code of Conduct will be available in multiple languages on the desktop of the Chromebooks issued to every student in FCPS. Paper copies are also available by requesting one here or by calling 859-381-4100.
Students New to FCPS
To register a new student in Fayette County Public Schools, families may start the process online.
Community Eligibility Provision
Our school qualifies for Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) under the USDA’s National School Breakfast and Lunch Program. CEP allows our school’s enrolled students to receive a daily breakfast and lunch meal at no charge, regardless of income or completion of a form.
All students enrolled in CEP schools will receive breakfast and lunch at no cost throughout this school year. However, it is still important for families to complete an application for non-meal related benefits associated with student free/reduced data. CEP schools call this the Educational Benefits Form. Filling it out helps both the student’s family and the schools.
All Families Please Complete
Paper forms: Families who cannot apply online may request a paper application by mail; please call (859) 381-3838.
