Notes from the Principal
Dear John Wetten Families,
April is already quickly approaching. Our students have enjoyed the warmer weather and sunshine this past week. It is a reminder that spring has arrived. We finished the second trimester of school and are only a few short months away from the end of the year. A few highlights to share with you in this newsletter are as follows:
March School Events Recap:
March 1st students participated in Everybody Reads Day at John Wetten. It was a fun day with students getting to hear stories read from some of our tremendous community volunteers in classrooms. The students had a fun time dressing up as their favorite book characters as well. We love celebrating literacy!
This past week many of our 4th and 5th graders participated in the Oregon Battle of the Books (O.B.O.B.). Teams participating read a series of 16 books over the past few months and then participated in multiple rounds of team trivia this week. It was exciting to watch the students as they worked together and enjoyed themselves, all while reading some great books!
On March 21st we have our Elementary Math Night Planned. Parents have been invited to bring their entire family to JWE for a night of math games and prizes from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This free event has been designed to celebrate math and have fun together with your families.
Zones of Regulation at JWE
John Wetten Elementary has begun the process of rolling out school-wide Zones of Regulation social emotional learning this past month during our class morning meetings. The purpose of this action is to promote a school-wide common language that is intended to help students identify emotions they may be experiencing throughout the day. This in turn builds school stamina and self-regulation skills. When students are able to better recognize how they are feeling, it helps them take the steps to self-regulate and become more engaged in their learning. Please take a minute to review the Zones of Regulation chart in our newsletter. Also, feel free to use this as a tool at home if you desire.
I hope you all have a restful spring break and are able to enjoy time with your kids. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
Sincerely,
John McAndrews
Principal

Playground After School Pick-up
It has been great to see so many families out enjoying the playground on the east side of John Wetten after school. We are asking that any student staying to play after school has an adult chaperone with them. If your child is instructed to walk home without an adult, please help us in reminding them to head immediately to their after school plan location. This helps us ensure all of our students are supervised and make it home in a timely manner.

Spring Dance 4/12
School Carnival 5/17
Box Tops App Code: JE3T4GUO
Parent Faculty Organization (PFO) News
JWE Parents and Guardians,
The PFO will be hosting a Spring dance on April 12th (date change)! The doors will open at 5:30 and the dance will run until 7:30. We please ask that parents and guardians supervise their children during the dance, this is not a drop off event. We'd also like to ask, in light of the last dance's vandalism, that parents/guardians please, if possible, escort their children to the restroom. This will hopefully cut back on opportunities for more vandalism. The dance will only be open to JWE students, their siblings, and parents or guardians. There will be snacks for purchase, cash only. We can't wait to see you all there!
The PFO is also looking for volunteers to help with the planning of carnival games, prep, set up, and tear down of the carnival on May 17th. If you are interested in assisting with any of those tasks please contact Jwepfo@gmail.com , any and all help is appreciated.
Box tops are now at $422.50! Woo hoo! We'd like to encourage you to download the Box Tops for Education app if you haven't yet. When setting up your account enter the referral code: JE3T4GU0 It's as simple as scanning your receipt after you shop!
Thank you,
The John Wetten PFO
Let's Show the Earth some Love
This April the school will be teaming up with Ridwell for Earth Day! Ridwell is an incredible recycling program that takes items we typically throw in the trash and recycles them into something new and usable! Starting immediately the school will be a collection site for plastic film.
Plastic Film Examples: bubble shipping envelopes, bubble wrap, air packing pillows, grocery bags, produce bags, cereal bags, bread bags, product overwrap like toilet paper or paper towel wrapping, ziploc bags, newspaper bags and poly shipping bags.
This unfortunately does not include things like snack wrappers, cling wrap, and paper and plastic mixed shipping envelopes. Our goal is to keep as much plastic film out of the landfill that we can!!
Also, if our school can sign up 10 new members by May 31st, Ridwell will award our school with onsite monthly plastic film pick ups for the 2024-25 school year! Please be on the lookout for the school specific URL code we will be sending in early April where you will be able to sign up as a new member. Come on JWE Leopards, let’s show this earth some love, one piece of plastic film at a time!!
Student Educational Equity Development (SEED) Survey
Dear Students & Families,
Over the next few weeks, students grades 3-11 will be asked to take a short 10-15 minute survey (Student Educational Equity Development (SEED) Survey). It is a state-developed survey that provides an opportunity for feedback and input so we can continue to improve as a school district.
The survey will ask students:
- About the kinds of activities they did in school this year
- What supplies they had to help with schoolwork
- How they felt about school and learning this year
- Any additional helpful information
Attached you will find the Annual Notice for the survey, an informational flyer that includes a QR code to review the survey, and the participation form. This Annual Notice has also been posted on the district and school websites.
If you have questions or concerns about the survey, please contact Petra Hoghova at hoghovap@gladstone.k12.or.us or 503-974-5076.
