Real-World Learning in Action!
Marine Biology students from Mr. Hatfield’s class had an incredible opportunity to release juvenile salmon that they raised from eggs right in their classroom! This hands-on experience was made possible through a partnership with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, giving students a firsthand look at the salmon life cycle and the importance of conservation efforts.
Experiences like this bring science to life, helping students build a deeper connection to their learning and their environment. Partnerships like this one are invaluable to our schools, providing students with real-world applications of their studies and fostering a sense of stewardship for our natural resources.
A huge thank you to ODFW and everyone involved in making this opportunity possible!
National Honor Society and Expedition Club
Bandon High School Students Making a Difference!
Bandon High School National Honor Society and Expedition Club joined forces to tackle a local cleanup mission at Bradley Lake Boat Ramp!
Armed with gloves, grabbers, and a whole lot of school spirit, our students worked together to remove trash, tidy up the area, and help keep our beautiful outdoor spaces clean for everyone to enjoy.
A HUGE shoutout to these incredible students for their hard work and dedication to our community!
National Honor Society
We had the honor of inducting a new group of outstanding students into the National Honor Society! These students have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and character, the four pillars of NHS.
Becoming an NHS member is no small achievement, it requires maintaining a strong academic record, demonstrating leadership in and out of the classroom, committing to serving others, and upholding the highest standards of integrity. We are incredibly proud of these students for their hard work and dedication!
Congratulations to our newest inductees! Your commitment to excellence sets an incredible example for our school and community. Keep striving, leading, and serving!

Mentoring the Youth
At BHS, we believe in the power of mentorship, community, and lifelong learning. When our high school students visit the elementary campus to read to kindergartners, they do more than share stories, they build relationships, foster a love of reading, and serve as role models for the next generation of learners. This experience not only strengthens literacy skills in our youngest students but also reinforces leadership, empathy, and a sense of service in our high schoolers. By connecting across grade levels, we create a culture of support, encouragement, and academic growth that benefits our entire school community.
Bringing Geometry to Life: Students Apply STEAM Skills to Model Home Construction
In our applied geometry class, students aren’t just learning equations, they're putting math into action! Using STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) principles, they are working hands-on to build scale model houses from blueprints.
Through this project, students are:
· Reading and interpreting architectural blueprints at 1/4 scale
· Applying geometric concepts to ensure accurate measurements and angles
· Using problem-solving skills to construct detailed models
· Developing real-world skills that connect math to engineering and design
This engaging, hands-on learning experience helps students see the practical applications of geometry while fostering creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking. Exciting to see these future architects, engineers, and builders in action!

Bandon’s Sweet Spot
By: Caitlyn Michalek
Immediately the smell of warm chocolate fills the air, compelling you to get a closer look at the 24 pans of beautifully swirled fudge, ranging from the deep brown of dark chocolate to the bright festive red of the cranberry. The mouth-watering aroma of the freshly mixed peanut butter fudge makes it almost impossible to walk away. If you are able to step away you will see Umpqua ice cream which is delivered weekly in a cycle of flavors. You may also notice the sweet, gooey, saltwater taffy sitting in cute baskets next to the “old-timey” candy cigarettes you may have used when you were a kid. As you can tell there are many sweet treats you would be able to grab to satisfy a grumbling tummy.
Though if you aren’t hungry while strolling through the shop you could also look at the immense number of sweatshirts, t-shirts, sweatpants and pullovers they offer. As the owner Christine Michalek states “We do our best to keep our inventory exciting with new styles and colors”. When you wander through the immense “small” shop you will see sweatshirts hanging in every corner, ranging from small to XXXXXL; the range of sizing is extraordinary. “We pride ourselves in having as many sizes available to ensure that our customers can find the right fit for them”, exclaims Christine, showingthis shows another reason that this store is one for everyone!
Customers small and large can be fitted wonderfully with a shirt from the “t-shirt wall” as Christine calls it. This t-shirt wall lives up to its nickname, having shirts displayed neatly on the dark stained wood contrasting with the varying colors of polyester cloth. The Old Man's Rule shirts on a dark wood display sitting to the right of the wondrous wall allow all to see the hilarious scripts lying on fronts and backs of the t-shirts. Christine expresses that “The Old Man’s Rule shirts are some of the best selling shirts in the store,” many people, old and young love the overall feeling that the shirts give to them, celebrating our elders. One of the most popular is the Local Legend which has a smaller print below saying; “if you don’t know me… you’re not from around here”; this funny quote lets the buyers have a good laugh while letting them show their love for their old folk.
Out of the 22,000 souvenir shops in the United States the Big Wheel General Store is one that has been in business for a long time. Transitioning from family member to family member, the store was bought in February of 1986 but was originally a feed store containing baby chicks, hay, dog food and cat food.
Christine's father; Don Whitmer, was the original owner of the Big Wheel General Store before its nickname of the “Fudge Factory” came to be. When Don transitioned the Store into a souvenir shop he chose to add fudge to the inventory although there was a limited selection. The options were slim having only traditional chocolate, milk chocolate and dark chocolate. He continued adding on in his years as the owner and eventually came up with about 18 different kinds. He increased the amount of clothing and other small gifts and trinkets while keeping it a more old fashioned aesthetic.
When Christine came into ownership she shifted the feel: she created a more modern rustic mood and renovated. The renovations lasted about a year and included making the whole business one floor whereas it used to have an upper dock where Don kept the old artifacts and the rest of the wood pieces that weren’t included in the museum. The museum remains almost the same as it was back in the 1900’s including wood sculptures and tables now of which are used for displaying some newer pieces like the sand art. Sand art can only be described as mesmerizing, when watching every grain of sand fall to the bottom you will be entranced by the colors that swirl through the liquid. When it lands it creates a picture that is unique to that turn. Every flip of the art creates a masterpiece that you only get to view once. As you waltz through the magical museum you will notice pictures of the rocks hanging from the cream colored walls, not just any rock but enormous boulders with shapes and names. The names have been given to them by their appearance, some appear to just be cats floating at sea while others may be a face sinking into the ocean. Many of which you can research their full background behind the aimusing names. As you exit the museum you become enveloped in the stream of youth sized t-shirts that fans into sweatshirts all leading back to the glass case holding the delicious flavors of the delectable fudge.

Valley Flora wanted to alert you to a few new programs that we - and other NW farms - are spearheading in in order to make fresh, local produce more accessible to low income families in our community. We’re trying to get the word out as widely as possible. If you have a spot to hang a poster (attached below), or room for a mention in your next newsletter, that would be wonderful! We are happy to provide you with a color-printed poster, just let us know! Also, please feel free to forward this email to anyone in your networks who would benefit from knowing about these programs.
- Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB): a program that helps low-income Oregonians purchase more fruits and vegetables while supporting local, family farms. Folks with SNAP benefits can purchase one of our farm’s community supported agriculture (CSA) shares and DUFB will provide 1:1 matching funds (they pay half the cost of the CSA with SNAP and DUFB covers the other half). It's a win-win that strengthens our community by providing better access to fresh, healthy food while helping local farmers earn a living.
- CSA Sliding Scale: our farm is offering a voluntary sliding scale payment system in order to make our food more accessible to everyone in the community. It’s been a beautiful example of community - and humanity - at its best.
