News From The Nurse
New Year’s resolutions can be for kids too! Resolutions can be a fun way to bring about a positive healthy change in your child’s life. Visit with your child about resolutions. Brainstorm different ideas with them. Help your child pick out a healthy, reasonable resolution. Set them up for success by offering encouragement, guidance, and reminders along the way. A couple resolution ideas are listed below:
- ·Get at least 10 to 11 hours of sleep each night.
· Establish a bedtime routine. Keep their sleep schedule consistent throughout the week. Turn off electronics at least 60 minutes before bed. Avoid caffeine and sugary drinks the second half of the day.
- Eat at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables daily.
· Make fruit and vegetables more appealing and accessible for your child. Offer fruit and vegetables at every meal and as a snack. Look up new recipes on how to incorporate them into your main dish. Visit myplate.gov for more information.
- Brush teeth twice a day.
· Set at time so the child brushes for at least 2 minutes. Monitor brushing habits now and then to make sure the child is effectively brushing by covering all tooth surfaces and brushing long enough.
- Drink enough water.
· Amount of water your child should drink depends on age, gender, and amount of physical activity. Offer water first instead of sports drinks, sugary options or caffeinated beverages.
- Get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily.
· The Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee recommends, “children and adolescents (6–17 years of age) engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, including vigorous-intensity as well as muscle- and bone-strengthening activities, at least 3 days per week.”
