MSEEC
Bi-Monthly Newsletter December 2024
Principal's Message
Dear MSEEC Cordova Elementary School Parents and Guardians,
As we approach the final month of the year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the wonderful accomplishments our students have achieved so far and express my gratitude for the continued partnership between school and home. December is a month filled with excitement and opportunities for learning.
In addition to our regular academic activities, we have several special events planned, including the NEHS induction, Parent Circle, and the Mother/Son Sneaker Ball, among others. These events provide wonderful opportunities to celebrate our students’ achievements and strengthen our sense of community.
The colder weather is also upon us, and we remind families to ensure that children come to school dressed warmly, especially for outdoor recess. Please label coats, hats, and gloves with your child’s name to help avoid misplaced items.
As we head into winter break, I encourage you to take time as a family to read together, explore creative activities, and reflect on the joys of the season. These moments not only strengthen family bonds but also support your child’s learning and development.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and I wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and joyful holiday season. Let’s continue to work together to make our school a place where every child thrives.
With warm regards,
Metin Caliskan
Principal

Truancy
In alignment with Shelby County Schools policies, MSE does track unexcused absences through truancy logging. After 3 unexcused absences, a letter will be sent home as a warning. At 5 unexcused absences, you will be required to come to the school for a meeting and create an attendance plan. At 10 unexcused absences, admin will choose to modify the attendance plan or transfer the case to truancy court. As truancy court is extreme and a last resort, we would like to avoid this at all costs. Here are a few things you can do:
- If your child is sick, send a handwritten note or formal doctor’s note to school with your student when they return. Excused absences do not count toward truancy.
- Don’t allow students to take unnecessary absences, staying home just because they don’t want to go to school.
- If you receive a letter, especially a 5 or 10 day truancy letter, please be diligent in meeting with admin to develop attendance plans.
Contact jsimpson@sememphis.org with questions.
Attendance Incentive
We will have class and individual incentives for attendance. Each week, the class with the highest attendance will get to have a champion banner hang over their door. At the end of each week, every student with perfect attendance will be eligible to receive several incentives including a free dress down pass, a homework pass, as well as an invitation to an exclusive attendance party!
Student Behavior Incentive
End of the Semester Celebration
When: December 19th
We would like to take some time each month to reward students who have been diligent with their behavior. For December, students who meet the Live School point requirement for demonstrating positive behavior will be invited to participate in a special celebration during school!
Home Visits Work!
Our faculty goes above and beyond!
We are initiating the home visit program in order to better meet the needs of the child and family. In promoting a partnership between parents and teachers, home visits provide the means for effective team problem solving and encouraging parent involvement. It also creates a personal bond between the students, parents, and teachers to ensure optimum success. In addition, it provides a sense of security for the parents to know that their children are in good and caring hands, and allows the parents to give feedback on their student’s academic experience. Our goal is to visit as many families as possible. If you would like to schedule a visit, please contact Principal Caliskan at mcaliskan@sememphis.org.

November's Word of the Month: APPRECIATIVE
This month, we have learned what it means to be appreciative and grateful. Also, we discussed the many ways that we can let others know how appreciative we are of them by using our kind words and actions.
Saying “Thank you” is an easy way to express your appreciation. Learn how to say “thank you” in other languages so that you can show gratefulness in many settings.
English = Thank You (Thank-yoo)
Spanish = Gracias (Grah-see-as)
French = Merci (Mare-SEE)
Italian = Grazie (GRAHT-see)
Chinese = Xie Xie (Shyeh-shyeh)
Turkish = Teşekkürler
