FAC Weekly Update
March 14, 2024
Good Afternoon, FAC Family
We hope that you had a great week. As we head into a well-earned Spring Break, we encourage our students and faculty to take the next week to refuel, re-energize, and re-engage. The last quarter of the school year is packed with events, and we need to be our best so that we can give our best. I hope that everyone will take the time for some self-care, and I look forward to the final nine weeks of artistic excellence for this school year!
Here is the latest from the halls of the Fine Arts Center...
This Week's Student Leadership Lesson
From "Hidden Potential" - by Adam Grant
“People who make major strides are rarely freaks of nature. They’re usually freaks of nurture.”
“Beating yourself up doesn't make you stronger- it leaves you bruised. Being kind to yourself isn't about ignoring your disappointments. We grow by embracing our shortcomings, not by punishing them.”
“Many people associate procrastination with laziness. But psychologists find that procrastination is not a time management problem—it’s an emotion management problem.”
“Ambition is the outcome you want to attain. Aspiration is the person you hope to become.”
Reminder - Offers for the 24-25 School Year
Today at 3:00 p.m., audition results and offers for the coming school year will be/were posted in Backpack. All students have until March 28 to accept or decline their offer - this goes for returning students, too! We will not be giving extensions, however will be giving some grace to our Charter School students as we continue to work through that situation.
FAC at the Reedy Reels Film Festival
Film students Elizabeth Townsend and Shaw Shurley will have films screened in the Reedy Reels Film Festival taking place March 22nd-24th at the SC Children’s Theatre. Liz’s film, Beside Myself, stars theatre student Kathryn Carlson. Shaw has two films, Head Space and Rideshare, starring local actors Carter Allen, Andrew Anderson, Loren Clark and Neil Shurley. Two film class graduates, Brody Young and Caleb Eells will have films screened in the festival as well.
Sandbox Percussion - Artist Residency
The Fine Arts Center Percussion Studio is honored to have GRAMMY®-nominated ensemble Sandbox Percussion in residence for the week of March 25. Described as “exhilarating” (The New York Times) and “utterly mesmerizing” (The Guardian), Sandbox Percussion is dedicated to artistry in contemporary chamber music. The ensemble was brought together in 2011 by a love of chamber music and the simple joy of playing together; today, Sandbox Percussion captivates worldwide audiences with visually and aurally stunning performances.
Sandbox Percussion’s 2021 album Seven Pillars was nominated for two GRAMMY® awards — Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance and Best Contemporary Classical Composition. The ensemble performed the piece more than 15 times throughout the United States and Europe last season, including at the Théâtre du Châtelet, in Paris. They will perform Seven Pillars in a concert at Furman University's Daniel Recital Hall on Tuesday, March 26. Tickets for the concert can be purchased at https://fine-arts-center.ticketleap.com/sandbox-percussion/.
This season, Sandbox Percussion also releases their fourth album, Wilderness, featuring the piece of the same name by experimental composer Jerome Begin. Besides maintaining an international performance schedule, Sandbox Percussion holds the position of ensemble-in-residence and percussion faculty at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and The New School’s College of Performing Arts.
