Cultivating A Community
January 12, 2025
Superintendent's Message
Dear WED Community,
SurveyWorks, a statewide school culture and climate survey that collects critical feedback from students, families, and educators will be made available for all stakeholders later this month. Last year, nearly 126,000 stakeholders statewide participated in the survey, sharing their perspectives about what is working and what needs to be improved in Rhode Island public schools.
SurveyWorks touches upon a range of important topics, including school safety, the quality of professional learning for teachers, respect between students and teachers, and how inclusive and welcoming school environments are for parents and families that want to be engaged.
SurveyWorks data is embedded into the state’s Report Card platform, reinforcing it as a key measure of school performance that families should look at to better understand the strengths and challenges of their school. At the district level, the results can help inform programmatic decisions that support robust student, family, and educator engagement. Specifically, in the WED, we use SurveyWorks data when we create our District Strategic Plan as well as each school's School Improvement Plans.
SurveyWorks is accessible on computers, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. Responses are completely anonymous and confidential with surveys available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The survey window will be open from January 21st through March 31st.
Please look out for information from your child's principal regarding how to access the survey. We thank you in advance for your thoughtful responses. If you have any questions about the survey, please do not hesitate to contact your child's principal.
Sincerely,
Patrick McGee, Ed.D.
Superintendent

WED Competencies for Success
They highlighted how the brain activity chart shows the benefits of engaging in deeper tasks like explaining and asking questions. The sponge and brick visual helped them demonstrate their focus on listening to understand rather than just listening to respond. They also described using the "I Can Ask Questions to Learn" chart to ask questions that help them better understand or clear up confusion.
Finally, they explained how the "Partner Talk Levels" guide them in moving from simple conversations to deeper discussions where they build on each other's ideas. It was clear to everyone that these tools support the students in having more meaningful and productive discussions in class.
