Parent Training: Surviving an Active Lethal Threat Event
We urge parents, guardians and community members to join us for this free, intense, interactive and educational training from Jesus Villahermosa, a retired law enforcement officer who now leads Crisis Reality Training. He will provide a heightened awareness and knowledge of how to prepare for and respond to an active lethal threat event involving a lockdown situation at your student’s school.
When: Tuesday, October 30, 6–8 p.m.
Location: Lake City High School auditorium, 6101 Ramsey Road, Coeur d'Alene
Who: This event is for parents, guardians and community members, not students. High school students at Lake City and CHS will have assemblies with Mr. Villahermosa the next day, Wednesday, October 31.

Emergency notifications on our app
Don't miss our emergency alerts! We issued four emergency notifications last week using the school district's new mobile app. Two concerned a threat investigation at Coeur d'Alene High School, and two were related to a precautionary evacuation Friday at Ramsey Magnet School of Science. The alerts went to our app users who have selected to follow those schools.
While these are not the only ways we communicate with families and the public, the notices do provide for fast and convenient ways to share important information. In addition, we received tips from app users who shared what they were hearing about the potential school threat. The "Report a Threat" feature instantly sends a message to key district and school personnel.

EXCEL's Big Event
The EXCEL Foundation this fall has awarded 64 classroom grants totaling $173,956 to teachers in Coeur d'Alene Public Schools. And since 1986, EXCEL has supported educational innovation and creativity by granting our teachers nearly $1.9 million!

It's bus safety week
This is National School Bus Safety Week, and our Transportation Department will practice emergency evacuation procedures with all student riders. Please keep in mind these school bus safety tips:
- Students should arrive at their bus 5 minutes early. Never chase after the school bus.
- Please respect the rights and property of others while waiting at the bus stop.
- Use caution when getting on or off the bus. Students who must cross a street should do so in front of the bus, never behind, and should be 10 giant steps forward of the bus. Always wait for the bus driver's signal before crossing.
- Be a responsible passenger. Help prevent the bus driver from becoming distracted by staying seated facing forward, keeping your hands to yourself, and using a quiet voice.
- Bus aisles must not be blocked with feet or personal belongings.
- Eating, drinking or chewing gum are not permitted on the bus.
- Only items that can be held on the lap are allowed on the bus. Animals, hazardous materials, water devices, skate boards, ski poles or any potententially hazardous items are not allowed.
Halloween safety tips
Kootenai Health offers these safety tips for Halloween:
- Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.
- Plan a safe route and set a return time home so parents know where older kids will be.
- Wear well-fitting masks, costumes and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips and falls.
- Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.
- Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating so you can see and others can see you.
- Walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic.
- Enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses and never accept rides from strangers.
- Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid homemade treats from strangers.
- Drive slowly and turn your headlights on during the day to spot children from greater distances.
- Be alert for kids during popular trick-or-treating hours of 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.
