August perhaps symbolizes the time bridge between summer break and Fall semester, when the newest members of our campus, the class of 26', are transitioning to exciting life as college students, when returning students resume their pathway towards graduation and future success, and when greater accomplishments are on the horizon through discernment on Loyola experience, hard work, and being disciplined and goal oriented.

Grant Title – MRI: Acquisition of a Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorter for the Establishment of a Flow Cytometry Core Facility at Loyola University Maryland
A team of faculty members from the Biology Department, led by Dr. Theresa Geiman, were recently awarded a $412,470 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to acquire a fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) instrument and establish a new Loyola Flow Cytometry Core Facility. The NSF Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) award was made to the Loyola team comprised of four members from the Biology Department: Drs. Theresa Geiman, Derek Kendig, Michael Tangrea, and Christopher Thompson. The FACS technology allows researchers to measure multiple fluorescently tagged molecular characteristics of single cells and separate the cells according to these traits. This instrument will be a powerful tool in advancing faculty scientific research projects on campus as well as provide valuable training for undergraduate students through laboratory courses and research experiences. Additionally, this technology will be available to faculty from other predominantly undergraduate colleges and universities in Maryland as well as local biomedical startup companies. Furthermore, the grant allows Loyola faculty to engage with the broader Baltimore community through development of a unique summer program for underrepresented students from area high schools providing access to the FACS technology and involvement in related research. Together with the 2015 acquisition of a confocal microscope and establishment of a Microscopy Core Facility, this new FACS instrument will continue to position Loyola as an innovative collaborative center for advanced biology research across the Baltimore region. Nursing presents a wealth of opportunities that are versatile and support the professional success of many types of learners. Advisors for future nurses are in a position to highlight the diverse ways of entry into nursing and encourage students to seek the pathway that best matches their unique goals. Loyola takes pride in it’s well-established tradition of guiding pre-health students to consider accelerated nursing programs as one of their pathways to become future healthcare leaders. Loyola’s Director of Pre-Health programs, Maiju Lehmijoki Wetzel, Ph.D. and a registered nurse herself, teamed up with a colleague, Linda Cassar, DNP, of The George Washington University, to publish an article “Advising Students to Prepare for and Excel in Accelerated Nursing Programs.” The article was published by IGI Global in Handbook of Research on Advising and Developing the Pre-Health Professional Student (2022).

Grand Seminar event for 2022-23 academic year, a signature annual lecture organized by the division of Natural and Applied Sciences, will be held on November 8, 2022 at McGuire hall at 6:00 pm. The reception leading to the lecture will be at 5:00 pm, and it will include Hauber Summer Research posters. The details about the speaker as well as the lecture topic will be shared in the following issues of the Synapse. We hope you mark this on your calendar and show your support for NAS programs and your interest in sciences by joining this important annual NAS event. Updates related to the November 8, 2022 Grand seminar including link to registration for this event will be included in the Grand Seminar page by October.

During summer 2022, we had 11 Hauber fellows participating in the summer research program and they were mentored by 9 dedicated NAS faculty members. Out of 11 Hauber fellows, 5 were sponsored by the generous support from our corporate partners highlighted below, and the remaining 6 Hauber fellows were supported by Hauber program. For those who couldn't attend Hauber fellows presentations, there are opportunities to learn about this year's Hauber summer research projects when Hauber fellows have poster presentations of their summer research work during 5:00-6:00 pm reception prior to the 6:00 pm Grand Seminar lecture on Tuesday November 8. Summer 2022 marks year 35 of the Hauber summer research program, which is a strong and important tradition at Loyola, which started in 1988.
