Principal's Message
Kia ora Whaanau,
Welcome back to Term 3. It is great to have everyone back. Thank you to all the whaanau that completed the community survey. Here are some of the themes we heard from you. In describing the school, we are a small rural school that goes from Year 1 to Year 13. We are friendly, fun, supportive, and approachable. We are in a place of positive change and development with new leadership taking place.
On supporting your children to have success in school, we heard you would like us to ensure all students no matter where they are at are pushed to do better, you would also like to know more about the learning happening in each class.
For communication, you feel whole school communication has improved, however sometimes with all the different media it is difficult to know where to go. You would like more communication at the classroom level.
For the school values, in general the displaying of our values is improving, the waka cards are well known and having positive effects for your children. You would like us to continue to work on this, for consistency across the whole school.
Our students in their surveys and discussions told us they generally like the school and feel happy at break times. They are motivated to learn when they have something exciting or practical coming up. They feel their teachers care about them and show this when they ask about things not to do with the class learning, for example personal interests, and events. They like choice in their work and feel they would like more support when they need extra help. They like camps and trips as it helps them build relationships with each other and staff.
On the 24th of August the Board of Trustees and Senior Leadership Team will be meeting to review the data collected from the community, students, and staff and from this we will begin to create the new 3 year strategic plan (what used to to be called the charter). This plan will be shared with you once finalised. In the next few weeks an infographic will be released to help clarify our communication channels and how they are used.
Lastly on the staff front, Matua Kramer spent some time in Wellington at the end of the term as a member of the NZQA review panel for Outdoor Education Leadership (OEL). This is a fantastic opportunity to see and a member of our school leading educational changes they review the NCEA standards so that they incorporate te ao maaori.
Also with staff we say goodbye to Carolyn Cossey on the 24th of August, she is heading to Pukekohe High to work as a specialist teacher in learning support. We wish her all the best. Monica Dunn will be taking on Carolyn’s role and starts with us on the 24th. We welcomed Camilla Cameron to Room 15 this term, she will be with us through to the end of the year.
Good luck to all our sports teams this week, have great games and represent our school well.
Ngaa mihi,
Rebecca Bills
