Eagle Sightings December
Holly Wehner, Principal
Dear Eagle Families and Caregivers,
At school this month our character trait is empathy. In September, October, and November, we focused on respect, responsibility, and gratitude. Even though we have moved on to a new trait, these are all important in our daily lives, and we will continue to review and discuss them. See if the FHES Eagle in your life can remember the definition of one of them (maybe even including sign language) and share it with you!
Every day students continue to demonstrate S.O.A.R. (Safe, On-task, Accountable, and Respectful) behaviors. On Friday a student name from each grade level is drawn from the S.O.A.R. awards that have been earned schoolwide that week. Students whose names are drawn have their names announced throughout the school that afternoon, they come to the office to pick a prize, and their name goes up on the Wall of Fame in the hallway for all to see. In addition to S.O.A.R. awards, we also have a sportsmanship award for a class that has shown the best sportsmanship for the week throughout activities in their school days. Mrs. Levasheff selects the class due to the sportsmanship she observes in P.E. and on the playground. The week’s winners are presented with the school sportsmanship trophy and they keep it in their classroom for the week. We also have a Golden Dustpan that is awarded to the class that has kept their classroom extra tidy that week. They also keep this in their classroom for a week. It is inspiring to see how proud they are of these accomplishments.
We will have a Family Game Night on Wednesday, December 11th, from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. We know this is a busy time of year, but we hope you’ll be able to join us. Students will have a chance to play games they’ve enjoyed in class, and it will be a great opportunity to connect as a community. This event kicks off our Family Engagement Nights for the year, and we’re excited to share future gatherings. We have ideas for more throughout the remainder of the year. The students have so many wonderful things to share with you from their days at school.
As always, thank you for your partnership in learning. We feel extremely fortunate to live and teach in this community. Have a lovely December, and I wish you a safe and Happy Holidays!
With appreciation,
Holly Wehner
➡️Electronic Devices at School⬅️
Please remind your child/ren about the following school policies:
- Personal electronic devices are not to be used at school. If a CELL PHONE OR SMARTWATCH is brought to school for afterschool use it must remain in the student’s backpack until the end of the school day.
- No texting or calling during school hours from student devices.
- All communication to or from home must go through the school office.
Growing Readers and Writers
High-frequency words are words that appear most often in printed text. FHES teachers refer to these words as: “snap words” (we want to know them in a snap), “trick words” (they can be tricky, and often don’t follow rules that can be sounded out), “sight words” (we want to know them by sight), “word wall words”, etc. Readers work hard to recognize these words with automaticity, not needing to “sound them out”. Reading research tells us that when these words are instantly recognized, our brains can apply effort to the other words of the text and the short term memory can focus on comprehension of what is going on in the story. There are varying lists for these high-frequency words (e.g. the Dolch List, the Fry List).
Click here to see a list of 109 Power Words! These words have a lot of “power” for beginning readers as they comprise 50% of the words found in children’s texts. The first 13 words represent power little words that make up 25% of the words in children’s texts. Ensuring that your reader knows all of these words can be very beneficial for their reading success!
Zones of Regulation
This month, our students have been learning about the Zones of Regulation, a tool designed to help children understand and manage their emotions in a healthy way. The Zones are categorized into four colors: Blue (low energy emotions like sadness or tiredness), Green (calm, focused energy, and ready to learn), Yellow (heightened energy emotions like stress or excitement), and Red (intense emotions such as strong anger or panic). With the help of a visual chart, students identify their feelings and explore strategies—like deep breathing or using a sensory tool—to regulate and return to the Green Zone. We also use a "meter" visual to show how emotions can shift between zones and how we can bring ourselves back to a balanced state. This program equips students with lifelong skills for self-awareness and emotional regulation. Ask your child about what they’ve learned and their favorite tools for calming or focusing!
