Salk Seahawk Scoop
Week of 3/2/2025
Spring Conferences
Student-Led Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, March 6th from 1-3:30 and from 4:30-7:30. This year, ALL families are invited to attend our Spring Conferences to celebrate learning!
This conference will be a true Celebration of Learning and will look a little bit different than March conferences in the past. We will host an open-house style event from 1-3:30 (Last conference will start at 2:45) and again from 4:30-7:30 (Last conference will start at 7:15), allowing families to attend during a 10–15-minute time slot that best fits their schedule. Each classroom will feature viewing stations where students can share their learning experiences with their parents. During this time, students will reflect on their goals, showcase their work, and highlight their progress since October. Teachers will circulate throughout the classroom providing support as needed. Each student-led conference is expected to last about 10-15 minutes. If all viewing stations are occupied in the classroom, we kindly ask families to wait in the hallway until a station becomes available.
Please know our special education staff will be available for walk-ins during the entire day. Specials teachers will be rotating between assigned buildings; however, if you’d like to speak to someone specifically just let us know in the main office and we will have them follow up with you.
Please understand this is a celebration of student learning. Teachers will be stopping and working with each family, however, the conference is student led and the teacher will need to keep moving to meet with all families.
Our goal is for 100% of students and families to attend this event. We look forward to celebrating your child’s learning with you.
Report Cards Are Coming Home on Wednesday
Report cards will be sent home with students on Wednesday, March 5th. Special Education Progress Reports will be sent home by Friday, March 7th. Please be sure to check backpacks.
March is Reading Month
March is designated as “Reading Month” in schools all around Michigan. Our goal is to promote a love of reading and to help our students learn that one way to build knowledge is through reading. We want to encourage our students to make good habits by reading every day! Our theme for this year is “Under the Sea” Here are some fun things we have planned for the month:
Logs: Starting Saturday March 1st, students will need to start keeping track of how many minutes they read on their logs. Students need to turn in their logs with a parent/guardian signature every Friday (the 7th, 14th, 21st, Monday the 31st). Logs that are due on March 28th will be accepted on the 31st. The school is divided into 3 teams: Starfish, Jellyfish, and Squid. All classrooms on the team with the most reading minutes will earn a prize! One Y5-2 and one 3-6 classroom with the most minutes will get to schedule a time before the end of the school year for a movie and popcorn party in the Media Center or their classroom. Also, students who read at least 300 minutes during our Reading Month will be receiving a free ticket to a USPBL baseball game at Jimmy John’s Field in Utica!
Teams:
Starfish: Makowski, Kowalkowski, Sally, Boskovich, Lasater, Armstrong, Smith
Jellyfish: Amigliore, Dixon, Browe, Gutow, Monette, Edmunds, Jenks, Mackezyk
Squid: Sarah, Gallagher, Hawkins, Filie, Herrera, Budnick, Gutc
Spirit days: We have a whole month of fun spirit days to get students excited about reading! Please encourage your students to participate!
Book Fair: The book fair is the 3rd through the 7th. It will be open for conferences on the 6th for parents/guardians to shop. You can also access our fair at the link below. Salk Library earns 25% of each online purchase. The proceeds earned from the book fair is used to purchase new and exciting books for our students!

Salk’s First-Ever Glow Party a Huge Success!
This past Friday, the PTO hosted the first-ever Salk Glow Party, and it was a night to remember! Held at Richards Middle School, the event brought together students, parents, and staff for an evening filled with music, dancing, and glowing excitement.
Students had an absolute blast enjoying the lively atmosphere, complete with fun glow effects and great music that kept everyone on their feet. The energy in the room was electric, and the smiles were glowing just as brightly as the decorations!
A huge thank you to the PTO and all the amazing volunteers who made this event possible. Your hard work and dedication helped create a special night for our Salk community. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for the next big event!
Sweet Success: February’s Principal Experience!
This past week, our Seahawks participated in a delicious Principal Experience—cookie decorating and fun activities hosted by Mrs. Makowski, Ms. Sarah, and Mrs. Amigliore! Students enjoyed warm, homemade chocolate chip cookies and got creative decorating their own heart-shaped treats. Along with the sweet snacks, they had a choice board of activities to enjoy, making for a fun and memorable experience.
The Principal Experience is a monthly event at Salk, designed to celebrate our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) program. Students earn Hawk Cash by demonstrating the Salk rules: Be Safe, Be Responsible, and Be Respectful. They can then redeem their Hawk Cash for classroom rewards or enter a drawing for a chance to participate in the monthly Principal Experience.
Each month brings a new and exciting activity, hosted by a different teacher.
Great job, Seahawks—keep up the positive behavior! 🦅💙💛
Congratulations Mr. Burrows
Salk elementary would like to welcome and congratulate Mr. Burrows to the Fraser Board of Education. Mr. Burrows is a Salk parent and we know he will serve the district well. Congratulations!
6th Graders Explore Future Careers at CTE Event
This past week, our 6th grade students had an exciting opportunity to explore career pathways during a special career fair held by the high school Career & Technical Education (CTE) staff and students.
Throughout the morning, students got hands-on experience with various career courses offered at the high school. They participated in interactive activities, trying their hand at some of the skills taught in these programs. It was an engaging and eye-opening experience, helping our young learners start thinking about their future interests.
As a special treat, each student received a t-shirt to remember the day. The event was a fantastic success, filled with learning, fun, and inspiration. A big thank you to the high school CTE staff and students for organizing such a meaningful experience!
Salk Seahawks Make a Difference!

A huge thank you to all the students, staff, and families who participated and contributed. Your kindness and generosity will make a real impact on the lives of children in need.
Way to go, Salk Seahawks! Together, we are making a difference.

Canvas- Parent Access
All Fraser classroom teachers provide instruction, resources, activities, and assessments to students utilizing the Canvas LMS. As a result, students have continuous access to the course materials and information regarding their achievement.
Parents/Guardians can also have continuous access to their student’s course materials and grades in Canvas by creating a parent/observer account. In addition, parents of multiple students can easily switch between their students to view grades and assignments within the same parent account.
All sign up information and resources are provided on the Fraser website.
Important reminders when using Canvas:
- Canvas works best in Chrome
- Please do not install the Canvas app (for parents or students). We are not supporting it as our staff and students are utilizing the web-based version of Canvas and it looks and works differently.
- If you signed up and paired with your students last year, you still have access to those students and their new courses this year.
- If you need to add more students to your account this year, please follow the directions provided below.
- If you have forgotten your password, you can use the Forgot Password? link on the parent sign in page. Then, enter the email address you used to set up the account to receive a password reset email.
- If you have forgotten the email you used, please reach out to Kim Keith, Kimberly.keith@fraserk12.org, for additional assistance.
Downloadable directions are linked below. In addition, helpful videos and walk-throughs may be found linked HERE.
Charlie the Therapy Dog
Charlie has made visits to Salk the last couple of years with great success. Students are happy to see him and he really brightens the mood. Charlie will make his next visit on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
Charlie's purpose is to ease student's anxieties and increase positive emotions. We do not want his presence to cause fear or anxiety. As a reminder, parents have the ability to opt out of having their student interact with Charlie. If you DO NOT want your student to be around Charlie, then please fill out the opt out form linked here.
For the safety of students with allergies and Charlie, he will not be in the lunch room. Charlie will also remain out of classrooms in which parents have a student who opt out. Charlie will be under my supervision and kept on a leash at all times.
Rules for Interacting with Charlie:
Use calm bodies and inside voices when around Charlie.
Always ask before petting Charlie.
Don't take food around Charlie/feed Charlie
Free Meals for All
Although not required, we do ask that families complete the Education Benefit Form located HERE. By doing so you help ensure the school receives additional funding.
