SOAR to New Heights and Go Where Eagles Dare!
Principal's Corner
Eagles!
October is a busy month! Many different events are happening on and off campus, including Dia De Los Muertos, Bird Club, the early stages of an E-Sports Team, Trunk or Treat, IB feeder school night at the SAISD Sports Complex, and much more. Please see the rest of the newsletter for details!
As we progress through the school year, I am amazed by your learners' joy, wonder, and advocacy for themselves and others. In the last two weeks, I have had streams of letters from various grade levels concerning multiple operations of the school:
- Emergency drills and how students think we should improve them.
- A possible reading retreat on the school's roof and how it should be built.
The last one was a hard pass from me, but if safety allowed, I would consider it.
Every letter was well-written and thoughtful about the presented needs and solutions. Many started with "Principal De La Garza, I respectfully disagree..." or, in a more direct tone, "Your policies need to change..." In any case, I love hearing from students and enjoy their passion for their education and schooling.
In 1899 Grant Allen wrote a book entitled, "Rosalba: the Story of Her Development" In it, a strong female character expresses the adage:
"All this time I was learning, learning, learning. People have often expressed surprise to me since that, with "my early disadvantages," I should yet be able to hold my own in society. To me, the wonder seems all the other way: how do our women come to know anything when they have never had points of contact with realities?
No schooling was allowed to interfere with my education."
I love that last line. It implies that education is not the sole responsibility of the school but the community surrounding the learner. Students who take responsibility for their education will far surpass what is provided to them by traditional institutions. Those students say, "I will never allow my schooling to get in the way of my education." They will guard themselves against tired old institutions, habits, traditions, and the old phrase, "We've always done it that way." Students who find themselves in this mindset are poised to change the world.
Keep encouraging your learners to question, take risks, and think complexly about people and problems. If they do, what a glorious education they will earn!

It was a great week for some of our MYP 8th graders to build international mindedness as they engaged in their very first Zoom connection with students at Al-Nabigha Al-Sagheer International School in Benghazi, Libya.

Meanwhile, the 7th grade used the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning model to present their positions to a mock city council on whether the upcoming holiday should be referred to as Columbus or Indigenous Peoples' Day.

7th Annual IB World Bowl
From TCIS:
Next Friday, October 14th we invite the feeder schools from Jefferson and Burbank IB World High Schools to the 7th Annual IB World Bowl football game and joint Feeder School Night at the cozy SAISD Sports Complex. Your entire school community (students, staff, parents and alumni) are invited to partake in the pre-game festivities and then enjoy the sights and sounds of Friday Night Lights between the two IB High Schools.
KSAT-12 News Anchor, and SAISD Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee Greg Simmons will be broadcasting LIVE from the stadium on the night of the game. In addition, Mr. Simmons will serve as the Honorary Pre-Game Announcer of the feeder school introductions during the pre-game March-in parade.
As Burbank is the HOME team, and the stadium is literally in the school's backyard, a large Burbank feeder turnout is expected. However, we know the power and competitive nature of the JEFF FEEDER TEAM LEADERS at Arnold, Baskin, Huppertz, Madison, Maverick, Nelson, Woodlawn Hills, Fenwick Academy, Woodlawn Academy, Longfellow and Jefferson, and all schools will ensure a strong turnout of junior (future) MUSTANGS.
There is still time to refer a student for GT testing!
