Thirteen HTHS students participated in various state-level Science Olympiad events on Saturday, March 23rd at Auburn – Anna Morris, Elly Morris, Lily Johnson, Sarah Partain, Clarissa Davidson, Kathryn Anne Walker, Megan Dudley, Logan Lochte, Joseph Gallagher, Jenna Stalls, Addison Olive, Katie Smith, and Parker Lybrand.
CONGRATULATIONS to the dynamic sister duo, Anna Morris and Elly Morris, for placing 2nd in state for the Write It Do It event and 3rd in state for the Forestry event.
HTMS Theatre Students Take on The Big Apple
The HTMS Theatre Department took 42 people to New York City for spring break. Besides seeing New York landmarks, the group also saw 3 Broadway shows: The Play That Goes Wrong, Aladdin, and Six. Some cast members from the HTMS spring show, Crazy for You, had the chance to see the Shubert Theatre where Crazy for You opened on Broadway.
Cahaba Kindergarteners Enjoy St. Patrick's Day Themed Learning
Leprechauns, shamrocks, the color green, pots of gold, and Lucky Charms lead to many learning opportunities for Cahaba Elementary's kindergarten students. In this short weeklong PBL, our students were able to engage in math, science, social studies, and language arts standards through many fun, hands-on experiences. From sorting and graphing Lucky Charms, finding Ireland on a map and globe, searching for the perfect shamrock to building the perfect Leprechaun trap and searching for sight words...it was a busy and productive week of learning.
Students used their writing skills to describe a shamrock after getting a closer look through a loupe. They engaged in creative writing skills as they wrote about a pot of gold, and lastly, used their word building skills to write a list of materials needed to build the perfect leprechaun trap. They followed the engineering process to create leprechaun traps in this fun STEAM project in which they determined how to best capture the leprechaun, drew a picture of their trap designs, wrote out a list of materials needed to build, selected the materials, and then built the traps. Traps were taken home to be tested and several reported they'd worked and caught a leprechaun! At the end of the week, all were able to answer the question "What is St. Patrick's Day all about?" What a fun learning experience for our students!
Paine Elementary Students Create Unique Dioramas
Paine Elementary second grade classes spent the last few weeks working on a project where they researched, wrote about, constructed, and presented biome dioramas. Having the children create their own models helped them understand not only the habitat itself, but it also expanded their scientific thinking about models. They were able to understand the common features and differences between different habitats by digging in and being part of the creation process. Upon completion, they practiced their public speaking skills by presenting to kindergarteners.

Cahaba Kindergarten Presents "Oceans of Fun!"
The kindergarten class at Cahaba Elementary delighted audiences with their musical program titled "Oceans of Fun." Transforming into colorful sea creatures with shimmering scales and flowing fins, students sang and danced with energy and joy. Friends and family enjoyed the performance, and it gave the students valuable performance experience. Thank you Tina Fortenberry for directing the program. And thank you kindergarten parents for helping create the ocean décor!

Mrs. Jennifer Peters, Leading TCS in Dyslexia Intervention Therapy
Jennifer Peters, Reading Coach at Paine Elementary, and Kelly McGough, TCS Accountability and Literacy Specialist, were invited to participate in a roundtable discussion hosted by The University of Alabama with Sen. Katie Britt of Alabama, Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Dr. Laura Cassidy, a Dyslexia Resource Center board member. The roundtable featured K-12 educators from around Alabama in the CALT (Certified Academic Language Therapist) program and gave them an opportunity to speak about their experiences supporting students with dyslexia in their respective schools and positive outcomes they’ve had as a result of UA’s CALT program. Teachers in the two-year program are required to complete 700 hours of practicum work before sitting for the certification exam. Jennifer Peters is in the second CALT cohort and will finish this innovative professional development program in May 2025. Trussville City Schools is proud of Ms. Peters for her commitment to dyslexia intervention therapy and welcomes the positive impacts that her expertise will bring to our students and teachers.
