November is Native American Heritage Month
National Native American Heritage Month is celebrated in November to honor the history, culture, and achievements of Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and affiliated Island communities. It's also a time to recognize the contributions of these groups to the establishment and growth of the United States.
Around the District
LAMS Community Art Show
LAMS student art displays are all around our community this month to brighten our short autumn days. Student artwork is on display at the Los Alamos Medical Center, Los Alamos Public Schools Credit Union, and the Los Alamos Public Schools District Office and School Boardroom.
Star of the Week
Congratulations to Los Alamos High School sophomore running back Jordan Herrera who was recognized as the Albuquerque Journal High School Football Star of the Week for week 11. He gained 122 yards and scored three touchdowns in a win over Miyamura.
Chamisa Middle Team Music Performance
Third and fourth grade students at Chamisa Elementary School performed Veterans Day themed music for students, staff and families last Tuesday. The show had been postponed due to the snow day. Music teacher Megan Tholen also created a slide show to honor veterans, and members of the LAHS NJROTC Color Guard presented the colors to open the performance.
Lightning Boy Hoop Dancers
Los Alamos High School freshmen and sophomores enjoyed a performance of the Lightning Boy Hoop Dancers during Topper Time last week. The Lightning Boy Foundation focuses on traditional hoop dancing and tribal youth, with dancers and instructors mostly hailing from Northern New Mexico pueblos. The organization began in 2017.
A second performance will be held this week for juniors and seniors.
Sports Lit Interviews
Students in LAHS English Teacher Lori Thompson's Sports Lit classes visited UNM-LA to Interview the Chancellor, Faculty And Staff.
National Honor Society
Seventy-two students joined the National Honor Society during the Induction Ceremony held last week. Keynote Speaker Jennifer McCumber, Executive Director of the Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation, talked about the four pillars of NHS: Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service. LAHS staff sponsors are Brandi Hults and Kyla Hooker. NHS officers for 2024-2025 are Uxue Sansinena, president; Lena Ronning, vice president; Sophia Sisneros, secretary; and Sophia Pieck, treasurer.

Happenings at the Elementary Schools
The Pinon Elementary K-Kids helped with the African Library Project.
Congratulations to the winners of the Mountain Elementary Spelling Bee: 1st place: Erin Mayer, 6th grade; 2nd place: Timothy Blair, 6th grade; and 3rd place: Natalie Johnson, 5th grade. The alternate is fourth grader Mia Lin.
Chamisa Elementary students present hand-painted skateboards to the county recreation facilities in appreciation of the new White Rock Skate Park.

Top 20 Best New Mexico Elementary Schools
All five Los Alamos Public Schools elementary schools hare listed in the Top 20 Best New Mexico Elementary Schools ain the U.S, News & World Report's annual "best" rankings. Mountain Elementary was ranked #1, followed by Pinon Elementary (#2). Chamisa Elementary is ranked #13, with Barranca Mesa Elementary at #15 and Aspen Elementary at #16.
Los Alamos Middle School was ranked the eighth best middle school in New Mexico.

Family Literacy Month
Join us in celebrating Family Literacy Month and Family Engagement Month by recognizing parents' and caregivers' vital role in building strong readers and writers. Throughout the month, we will share popular resources from the National Center on Improving Literacy to help improve literacy at home.
Free Course: Understanding Evidence-Based Literacy, the Family Edition
A five-lesson course for parents and families to learn how evidence-based literacy practices can support all children's literacy needs, complete with practical examples.
For Students
Saturday School
Saturday School is open to all Los Alamos Middle School and Los Alamos High School students as an opportunity to catch up on late work, complete missed assignments, take make-up tests and receive help with homework.
All Saturday School sessions for the 2024-2025 school year will be in person in E-wing at LAHS.
Sessions run from 8:30 am - 11:30 am for 7th and 8th graders, and 8:30 am - 12:00 pm for high school students.
To register, email lahssaturdayschool@laschools.net with the student's name and date requested.
