Dear Students and Families,
I hope everyone enjoyed Fog Fest last weekend! October is usually filled with lots of events. Today, the BLSU hosted a piñata party in the courtyard and is showing a movie this evening. It is great to have students enjoy the events that clubs work hard putting together.
On Tuesday October 8th, OSPTO will be hosting the annual Trivia Night! This is always a fun evening so please come join. The details are below.

Oceana Yearbook 2025 on Sale Now

Youth Mental Health Symposium: Your Child's Technology Use and Digital Safety
NAMI, a local mental health advocacy organization in San Francisco is hosting a youth mental health symposium as a part of NAMI SF x Youth Mental Health, an event series highlighting youth mental health in October. For families, caregivers, and educators who want to support mental wellness for children and teens. A panel of experts will discuss the benefits and risks of social media use, how to identify problematic technology use, what an effective family social media plan looks like, and how to support your child relative to online spaces.
This free, virtual (via Zooom) webinar is on Thursday, October 24 from 6:00 - 7:30pm.

Nicole Owings-Fonner, MA, PMP, is the Director of the American Academy of Pediatrics National Center on Social Media and Youth Mental Health.
Maya Hernandez, Ph.D., is the Senior Manager of Next Gen Initiatives at Go For Broke National Education Center.
Derek E. Baird, M.Ed., is the author of The Gen Z Frequency and serves as a social media consultant.
Reichi Lee, J.D., serves as the Director of Curriculum and Programs at My Digital TAT2.
Allcove San Mateo
Allcove San Mateo is a youth drop-in center for ages 12-25 where they can utilize the space,
access services, attend free weekly events and workshops. The services offered at allcove San
Mateo include mental health, physical health, substance use, peer support, family support, and
supported education and employment. Currently, all their services are free! allcove San Mateo
offers services in both English and Spanish. Aside from accessing services, youth can use the
space to study, hang out, and connect with their peers along with attending engaging events
and educational workshops.
What makes allcove San Mateo unique is they work closely with their Youth Advisory Group
which consists of 25 individuals ages 16-25 who live and go to school in the community. Youth
voices are implemented within all aspects of the center from service implementation, program

Oceana Students were sworn in JUHSD Student Trustees by Board Present Kalimah Salahuddin. Thank you students for taking on this vital role to represent student voice during board meetings.

2024 Leadership Training Day
Led by a CADA (California Association of Directors of Activities) facilitator with more than 10,000 hours in leadership training experience, Leadership Development Days provide opportunities for ASB students to become inspired and contribute to the betterment of their campus and communities.
Leadership Development Days utilize experiential learning activities to unite students and develop lifelong skills. The curriculum is centered around learning effective communication, cultural competencies, connecting to others, individualism vs. collectivism, expanding the leadership base, perseverance, and courage to become the best version of yourself.
BLSU Pajama Party
Oceana's Black Latinx Student Union's piñata party and pajama movie night was a hit! Students enjoyed swinging blindly at colorful piñata filled with goodies and then snuggled up in their pajamas for a movie night, watching the Book of Life.
Pie Ranch Field Trip
Mr. Hagen took students to Pie Ranch on October 2nd. Oceana is a partner school of Pie Ranch. Students visit Pie Ranch and have a wide range of opportunities to learn field to kitchen education. Our students love this opportunity!
Trivia Night
Trivia Night will be next week on October 8th from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm in Oceana's cafeteria. Looking forward to seeing you all there!
Please RSVP here or through QR code for Oceana High School's Annual Trivia Night! The night is hosted by the OSPTO as a fundraiser for the school. We will provide pizza and soda (including a vegan option) with a suggested donation of $5 per person or $20 per family (pay with cash or check at the door). Please RSVP so that we know how much pizza to buy! Hope to see you there!
Hygiene Drive
Oceana's Annual Hygiene Drive began on Monday, September 23rd! We encourage students and staff to bring unused hygiene products to their advisory's collection bin every Friday until October 25th. All donations will be brought to the Pacifica Resource Center and distributed among community members in need. Remember, the advisory with the most donations will receive a pizza party, so donate for a chance to celebrate!

Fall Fun Fest at Vallemar
Vallemar needs help for their Fall Fun Fest! The event is on Friday October 18th, from 4-7pm.
They need help setting up after school ; help with taking tickets at the bounce houses and help tearing it down. Any 1-2 hour windows of time on October 18th from 2:00-7:30 PM would be greatly appreciated. It would be an extremely fun event to attend while you get community service hours!

Second Harvest Food
On October 12th, there is a Second Harvest Food distribution at Jefferson High School from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Daniel Hagen will be there to help students at the event. Students should contact Laurie at lhughe@jefffersonunion.net if they are planning on attending.
Financial Aid

Financial aid applications open on December 1st and the priority deadline is March 2nd! There will be a Cash4College event for all senior families on Wednesday, February 12th from 6-8pm in the library. Sign up and more information to come in the spring semester!
CSU App Workshop
The date of Ms. Owyang's CSU application workshop has changed to October 7th during flex time. If you are unable to attend this one, she will be hosting a second workshop on October 28th. Be sure to sign up with her through Teachmore!

Wellness Counseling Request Form
Wellness Counselor and School Social Worker can provide support with short-term mental health, stress management/mindfulness, grief/loss, anxiety/depression, health appointments, crisis, referrals to community resources/outside counseling, and more! No question or concern is too small!
