CDW Weekly Wrap-Up

We have officially met the mid-point of the 2022-2023 school year. One way to prepare for the second half of the school year is to make a plan.

• What did your child(ren) do that was successful in the first half of the year, and what does your child(ren) need to do to move forward?
• Focus on one or two things that will help guide the way for your child(ren).
• Reach out to the teachers with concerns or questions.
• Talk with your child(ren) about school, share your thoughts, and ask open-ended questions such as, "What are you looking forward to?"

Now is a great time to set goals and have discussions about the second half of the 2022-2023 school year with your child(ren).

Thursday, February 9th~ PTO Casino Night

Grade 5 did a lab activity on states of matter. They then had to use evidence from their lab to make claims on what state of matter each substance was. In the end, they find out that all of the substances are actually colloids and are mixtures of two states of matter.

Fifth grade Math Lab students learned about Area and Perimeter by completing a Scavenger Hunt. They worked together to solve 10 problems involving area and perimeter, and the correct answer led them to their next clue.

Students in Grade 6 Art have been learning about radial symmetry. The goal of the current project is for students to create a radial design using their name in block letters or bubble letters, around a center point.

First the students folded the paper to make their triangles. Then they wrote their name in each triangle from top to bottom in block or bubble letters. After tracing the lines of their name, the students folded the paper to trace their name in the next triangle, and so on. Lastly, the students colored in their designs so that by the end, they had a colorful Radial Design!

In 6th Grade Design Thinking, students are engaged in a Digital Citizenship Unit this week. During this Unplugging Digital Drama lesson, students worked with their teacher in a whole class way to analyze a fictitious digital drama scenario, focusing on how to de-escalate digital drama, when to get an adult involved, and how social media posts are connected to your character just as much as in person actions.

Congratulations to Jason Jun, a 7th grader at CDW, who recently won two awards from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards 2022. The Scholastic Art and Writing contests are held each year for students in Grades 7-12, and students can apply in 28 categories of art and writing. Submissions are then judged by renowned artists in the visual and literary arts. The judges look for the best work in originality, skill, and emergence of a personal voice or vision.

Charles DeWolf Middle School is excited to have Mr. Gian Paul Gonzalez present to our students on February 7, 2023. Gian Paul Gonzalez is a motivational speaker who provides opportunities for youth to become empowered members of their community through extracurricular activities, events, and programming. He also bridges the gap between individual growth, improving families, and unifying communities around a common core belief that there is hope for each child personally, academically, socially, and economically. His strategies/mechanisms are meant to help students achieve more now and in their future endeavors. One of Gian Paul's showcase presentations is called ALL IN, which recounts a motivational speech Gian Paul gave the NY GIANTS the year they won the Super Bowl.

The girls' basketball team finished its season with a record of 12-3 with a 44-32 loss to Closter in the Northern Valley Championship. Alivia Badurina led the Lady Knights with 16 points. Lexi Caunedo had 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 blocks. Christina D'Andrea chipped in 5 points.

The boys' basketball season came to an end in a hard fought, well played game with a two point loss to Closter 57-55 in the Northern Valley Championship game. From Coach Westervelt: Although the team fell two points short of their goal, it doesn't take away from the excellent season that they had. The effort and heart the boys showed this season is second to none.

Congratulations to both teams on a successful season!

The CDW Lost and Found always has lots of items searching for owners! One way to help us locate the owner is by labeling your child's items with his/her name. The CDW Spirit Wear store is available on OTPTO.org! The Long Term Store is open year round and orders are shipped directly to the purchaser. The Short Term Store will reopen in the spring.

As we get deeper into the winter months, here is information about delayed openings at CDW.

• Staff will be available for drop off to begin at 9:30 AM.
• Homeroom begins at 10:00 AM.
• After 10:00 AM, students need to enter through the front door for a tardy pass. Please drive around to the front to drop them off since the other doors will be closed.

If your child is not going to attend school, please contact Mrs. McCarthy at 201-664-1475 ext. 2103 or McCarthy@nvnet.org.

In an effort to minimize the potential spread of illness at school, please keep your child home if he/she:

• has a fever. Students should be fever-free for 24 hours without medication prior to returning to school.
• is nauseous or is vomiting.
• has diarrhea.

The Borough of Old Tappan has amended Ordinance 242-17. The changes are noted below:

• Left and right turns are prohibited onto Charles Place from Old Tappan Road between the hours of 7:30 AM-8:30 AM and 2:30 PM-3:30 PM on school days.

• Left and right turns are prohibited onto Kay Street from Leonard Drive between the hours of 7:30 AM-8:30 AM and 2:30 PM-3:30 PM on school days.

Old Tappan Police Officers will be strictly enforcing the ordinance.

Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco III, the Board of County Commissioners, and the Bergen County Division of Mental Health & Addiction Services invite all middle and high school students to enter the Stigma-Free Sticker Contest! The Grand Prize winner will receive a $150 gift card. Entries are due by March 6th. Please see the attached flyer for rules and details and see Ms. Watters for more information.

We are collecting plastic film in the three containers outside of CDW. Once a month, from October through April, our CDW students in the Environmental Justice classes will retrieve the collection bags, weigh the contents, and track our collections. Our custodians will then bring our recycling to the collection center. In April, we will find out how our school ranked in the collection of recyclable plastic film. If we collect the most in our school size category, we could win another Trex bench for our outdoor classroom! Last year we collected 1,796 lbs of plastic!

Membership in the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at Charles DeWolf Middle School is open to any seventh grade student who meets all the membership requirements at the end of the third marking period in 2023.

During the week of April 24, 2023, eligible students will be identified and invited to apply

for admission to the NJHS by email. An email will also be sent to parents of eligible

students. The induction ceremony will be held during the week of May 15, 2023 (subject to

change).
