A Note to our Parents
It is hard to believe that the end of the school year is right around the corner! This is the time of the year that students get to show off all their gains in maturity and responsibility. It is truly the best part of the year when classroom discussions are at their best and students understand fully the classroom expectations. We hope that you will spend some time helping your child reflect on their progress over the year and praise them for all of their efforts!
Now that the weather is getting nicer, we would also like to remind our families that adult supervision is not provided until 8:20 am and students should not arrive before 8:20 unless they are participating in the breakfast program or are enrolled through the park district's OASIS program. If your family's schedule conflicts with the 8:20 arrival rule, please contact the school office and learn how you can enroll your child in the before-school breakfast program.
Happy Spring,
Sincerely,
Mr. John Jennings, Principal

Notes from the Health Office
April is a great month for health topics! I am not sure I could pick one specifically, so I will leave a little of each for you to learn about. Be sure to click the links provided below to gain more knowledge regarding the highlighted newsletter topics.
April 7th is World Health Day! The theme for 2023 is "Health for All"! World Health Day is celebrated annually, drawing attention to specific topics, and is celebrated on the day that the World Health Organization (WHO) was founded in 1948. The WHO leads global efforts to promote healthier lives during all life stages.
April is Stress Awareness Month; it has been recognized every April since 1992. Stress is a reaction to a situation where we feel anxious or threatened. In order to live a happy, healthy life, we need to develop healthy coping skills. Stress is a natural reaction to wanted and unwanted changes in our environment resulting in physical, emotional, and intellectual responses. Long-term stress can result in physical symptoms, such as headaches and stomach issues, and it can lead to heart disease or a stroke. When placed into stressful situations, our bodies release specific stress hormones causing an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and glucose levels.

STRESS MANAGEMENT
It’s no secret that young children and teenagers experience stress just as adults do. While it may be hard to imagine what stressors a young child or teenager has, they experience them everyday within their world. Some sources of stress for them include:
School demands and frustrations
Problems with friends and/or peers at school
Negative thoughts or feelings about themselves
Family changes or challenges
Death of a loved one
Taking on too many activities
Social media (check out the Ted Talk below)
When stress gets too overwhelming and consistent, it can lead to anxiety, withdrawal, physical illness, aggression, or other negative effects. They can benefit greatly from learning stress management skills. Stress management skills will help students deal with stress at school, at home, and in social situations. Parents and guardians can help students by monitoring for signs of stress, modeling stress management skills, and supporting them through listening and being involved.
How do I know if my student is stressed?
These signs could be an indication that your child is experiencing stress
Irritability and anger - stressed out children may be more short tempered and possibly lack the words to express how they are feeling
Changes in behavior - if your child typically likes to hang out with friends and get out of the house, suddenly not wanting to go anywhere or socialize is a change in behavior or if your child is acting out and they are typically a great listener
Trouble sleeping and/or a negative sleeping pattern
Neglecting responsibilities - if a child feels their plate is too full, they may feel too overwhelmed and not start any of it or know how to start crossing items off their to-list
Eating changes
Changes in health - stress can show up as physical symptoms, such as stomach aches or headaches
What stress management skills can I teach my child?
If you notice your child presenting warning signs of stress, it is important to open up a conversation to check in and use it as a learning opportunity for stress management skills. Children can learn to decrease stress with the following routines and behaviors:
Exercise and eat regularly
Have a good sleep routine and get enough sleep each night
Avoid excess caffeine
Learn relaxation techniques (such as deep abdominal breathing, guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation)
Talk through situations that cause stress and role play managing the stress
Learn to chunk and separate bigger tasks into smaller tasks
Practice using positive self-talk and challenging negative thoughts
Take a break from stressful situations (if possible) and use activities such as listening to music, talking to a trusted person, drawing/writing, or spending time with a pet to reduce stress
Build a network of friends who can help to cope in a positive way
By using these techniques, children can begin to learn how to manage their stress. Parents/Guardians can also help by modeling their own healthy coping skills when dealing with stress of their own, allowing the child to problem-solve on their own first, limit social media, and combat negative thinking if your child expresses negative thoughts. To the left is a great visual with additional ideas on ways to cope with stress.
If you would like additional information regarding stress management for your family or child please contact the mental health department at your building.

For the month of April, Kelvin Grove will have a focus on social awareness and relationship skills as their CASEL competencies.
Social awareness is the ability to understand the perspective of and empathize with others including those from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and contexts. Social awareness skills include taking others perspectives, recognizing strengths within others, demonstrating compassion, and recognizing situational demands and opportunities.
Relationship Skills is the ability to establish and maintain healthy, supportive relationships and to effectively navigate settings with diverse individuals and groups. Relationship skills include the ability to communicate effectively, develop positive relationships, resolve conflicts constructively, show leadership skills, offer support, and stand up for the rights of others.
This information and more on CASEL’s five competencies can be found at https://casel.org/fundamentals-of-sel/what-is-the-casel-framework/
