Is it your contract (appointment) renewal time?
All members who are up for renewal AND committee colleagues who are charged with recommending their coworkers for reappointment or permanency are encouraged to do two things:
- Contact your union representatives to understand your rights and responsibilities.
- Remember that recommendations are based on competence and effectiveness.
Budget considerations are not the concern faculty or professional staff at any SUNY institution. Their job is to find the best qualified people to educate and serve the students we have and will have in the future. The role of Management is to find and manage the resources to accomplish this objective. Management’s only job is to support the faculty and staff.
Do not make the mistake of trying to do management’s job.
Candidates for reappointment – present your case for renewal based on your accomplishments and plans to increase your value and effectiveness going forward towards stated educational goals
Committee Members – judge your colleague’s accomplishments and stated objectives based on what they bring to the educational goals of the institution and their effectiveness in teaching.
Supervisors- stick to the performance program you have developed with your employee and make
thoughtful recommendations based on that program.
We are all concerned with the fiscal state of our beloved SUNY Potsdam. The way forward out of this dilemma is to stay true to the founding principles of Higher Education in the state of New York, and to support each other in our collective pursuit of these principles.
