May 2024
Hello Theiss families,
We are in the home stretch of the 23-24 school year and excited to see all the growth our students are making with our end of year assessments. Please continue to encourage your child to put forth their best effort for learning at school, as these next few weeks are just as important as the last 32. Students will be taking their "end of year" or EOY MAP Assessments over the next couple of weeks in all grades. They have made goals for their MAP scores since the beginning of the school year, and now we get to celebrate their growth with them!
We have many special events in the month of May, one being Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week! Please take a moment to show thanks and appreciation to your child's teacher and support staff. Campus leadership has a fun "Friends" themed week planned with support from the Theiss PTO, but we would love for our whole community to participate. Check your child's folder for a flyer (attached in this newsletter as well) for ways to participate. Other special events are listed in this newsletter and more details will be shared with you as we get closer.
As always, please let us know if you have questions or concerns. We hope that you will be able to join us for our upcoming events!
Respectfully,
Mrs. Jessica Taylor

PARENT EDUCATION:
Did you know?
Tardies and Early Dismissals not only affect student attendance, but they decrease the number of minutes of instruction students receive each day. You can see from the graphic that just a few minutes each day, adds up to a LARGE number each school year.
How can you help?
*Take note: School hours this year are: 8:10 - 3:25
*Our doors open at 7:40, earlier than in years past. Set an alarm on your phone to leave 5 minutes earlier than needed to arrive at school on time.
*Schedule routine Dr. visits during our numerous student holidays throughout the year.
*Bring in Dr. excuses if you are arriving late from a Dr. appointment so it's not counted as a tardy.
Goals:
Our goal this Spring is to decrease the number of tardies and early dismissals to less than 15 of each daily. During the Fall, we calculate the following tardy an early dismissal averages:
Tardy Daily Averages
31 - Oct. Average
29 - Nov. Average
38 - Dec. Average
28 - Jan Average
Early Dismissal Daily Averages
16 - October
24 - November
38 - December
20 - January
Our front office calculates these percentages and more daily. Check out our daily stats on this poster when you enter the front office!

PROCEDURE UPDATES:
Dress Code Updates:
We have seen an increase in adults entering our building with attire that does not follow our KISD dress code. Our staff and students follow our dress code, linked here in our Student Handbook, to ensure a positive supportive school environment where students can focus on learning. Please help us ensure our students are not distracted by you attire by adhering to the following requests.
Reminders:
*All people entering our building are expected to be fully clothed. Crop tops are not allowed, as they do not comply with being fully clothed.
*Clothing should sufficiently cover all private areas and must not be see through. Unfortunately, our staff and students have reported seeing some undergarments and body parts as visitors in our building have bent over. Please make sure what you are wearing doesn't put you at risk of exposing others.
*All people entering our building must be wearing shoes.
*No attire with offensive or suggestive graphics or words will be allowed.
We reserve the right to refuse entry to any adult who is not wearing attire that meets the KISD dress code minimums.
Thank you for taking time to review your attire before coming to visit school! We appreciate you making sure we provide a positive school culture and environment for all our students and your children to learn and grow.
Lunch Visitors
UPDATED: We want to be sure all parents understand our expectations for lunch visitors. We want our parents to enjoy coming to have a special lunch with their child, but we have some guidelines that need to be followed. For more information about when your child's grade level assigned day is, please visit last month's Tiger Tribune.
Here are a few reminders, as we've had some problems with these lately:
- Parent visitors eat with their child(ren) only. No additional friends are invited to join.
- Our cafeteria is a photo free zone to protect everyone's privacy.
- Parents are not allowed back into the instructional zones before or after lunch.
- Parents are not allowed to sit at the class tables, only the designated parent tables.
Thank you for understanding!
Visitor - Entrance Procedures
- Ring the doorbell.
- Identify yourself, your child and your purpose for the visit.
- Show a valid photo ID to the camera near the doorbell and signage.
On the sign, you can see in fine print that you should not let other parties in behind you. I know it may feel awkward to ask people the let the door close instead of following in behind you, but it does help us ensure we are following the KISD protocol for every visitor every time they visit our campus.
*The only exceptions to this protocol will occur when we have large campus events. We have a campus specific protocol for special events due to the number of visitors that arrive at one time.
Tardies & Attendance
This year, perfect attendance awards will be recognized in each quarter's learning celebrations. In order to receive the perfect attendance award, students may not have more than 3 tardies for the quarter in addition to zero absences. Each quarter the tardies and absences will be reset for the award purpose, however cumulative totals will be used to identify families in need of intervention for attendance throughout the year.
Increasing our attendance rate, as well as decreasing tardies and early dismissals is part of our campus improvement plan each year, as it plays a part in our accountability system. Our attendance rate overall for last year grew 1% from the year before, which is great progress. We continue to strive for a 97% rate or higher by the end of the school year. Thank you for doing your part in helping our attendance rate!
