Meeting the needs of every learner, every day
A Note From Your Principals
Fall is in the air! Although we will miss the summer, we get to look forward to the beautiful Wisconsin scenery that comes with the season. When the temperature outside turns chilly, don’t you want to just cozy up on the couch with a mug of cocoa or cider and a good storybook? This might be a good time for your child to dig up a book to read about the seasons, pumpkins, apples, football, or colorful leaves.
We know that 4-day school weeks for students means adjustments and schedule changes for most families. At the same time, we value this time as a staff to work on meeting the needs of ourselves as learners. Not only do staff have ample time to plan and prepare in their learning spaces and collaborate with each other, but each district Professional Development (PD) day is spent participating in ongoing learning as well. This past Friday, our CEPS staff spent time learning important literacy updates related to Act 20 (see previous newsletter for more info), and began training in an explicit phonics program that will support additional teaching for those students who need more intensive support. More, our special education assistants (SEAs) spent a large amount of time working together to create plans for students they support for when SEAs are absent. Finally, our CEPS staff joined Waubesa staff at their school for joint learning about how the brain develops at a young age, how trauma can impact development, and what we can do as educators to support meeting the myriad social-emotional needs of today's students. Thank you to our community for supporting this important work we do on days where students are not present.
On a different note, we are entering the month of October this week! Each month at CEPS has a different theme, and we work to connect these themes to student instruction across all environments, embedding behavioral expectations, along with topics of equity and diversity and social-emotional learning, and, importantly FUN for ALL! We typically introduce the theme at an assembly, and there are weekly lessons provided that reinforce them. This month, the theme is Diversity and Acceptance! Students will learn what makes us each unique, how our identities are similar and different to each other, and how differences make us all better. The core concept will be "I promise to stand up for what's right."
Thanks for reading!

Notes & Updates
Family Feedback
We appreciate feedback from families. Several items submitted through the "open feedback" link below include questions about the timing of this newsletter and about our english-language arts (ELA) curriculum. Specifically, the timing of this newsletter (Sunday at 6 PM) was agreed-upon by all district schools based on feedback provided by families last year through a variety of forums. Second, last year was our first year implementing our comprehensive ELA curriculum, Wonders 2023, that covers all components of structured literacy instruction (e.g., phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, spelling, reading, writing, etc.). We provided ongoing updates in this newsletter to keep families in the loop. Based on declining readership of those updates as last year progressed, we have let our teachers know to keep families informed of curriculum updates at the classroom level. In general, we want you to know we read and consider all feedback you provide to us! Sometimes we might be able to make changes based on feedback you provide, but if we're not making a change, it's best to at least provide rationale!
Volunteers Wanted: We Want YOU!
In order to account for adjusted roles and responsibilities among fewer staff this year, due to staff and budget cuts after April's failed referendum, we have identified areas in which volunteers could help us out. Keep reading, and if interested/have questions, reach out! For most positions, we are open to either one volunteer or several volunteers to help cover daily needs/larger projects.
Needed Now/Soon:
- Student Art Hanging: Help hang our beautiful student art; contact Art Teacher Mrs. Reda at kinstla@mcfsd.org
- Spartan Star T-shirt Order Sorting: One-time help needed when orders arrive
- Ongoing/Daily Lunchroom Assistance: Daily help needed in the cafeteria, especially with kindergarten (11:05-11:35); also 2nd grade (11:50-12:20) and 1st grade (12:35-1:05)
- Ongoing/Daily Lunch Card Sorting: Help re-organize student lunch cards from 1:00-1:30
- Weekly Book Room Organizing: Re-shelve books in our school's book room; once-weekly & flexible timing
- Clerical support: Variety of office tasks, projects, etc. throughout the year; we're compiling a list of those interested in being contacted on an "as needed" basis
How to help: If interested in any of the above needs, please contact Associate Principal Brooke Hauser at hauserb@mcfsd.org with your name, desired roles, and best contact info.
Before helping: You will need to complete a Volunteer Disclosure Form and have a background check (sent via email link after you fill out the form) that is good for three years. If you completed one last year, you're all set! If you haven't done one at CEPS, please do so before your first volunteer date. Note that this is the same process for field trips and classroom volunteering.
Spread the word: You don't necessarily need to be a current parent/guardian of a CEPS student for most of our volunteer needs. If you know of a relative or community member who would like to help out in our schools, share this message with them!
Shoes Needed
Our Health Office is seeking shoe donations! We are running low on spare shoes for kids when they get ruined/dirty/soiled/etc. Specifically, we are looking for boys/girls size 12-4 tennis shoes. Feel free to drop off at the main office for Heather and Stephanie in the Health Office. Thank you!
On the Same Page
Thank you for keeping your child's relatives/caregivers in the loop on school procedures. For example, it is most helpful when other adults know ahead of time that if they arrive to school, they need to bring an ID and the parent/guardian needs to contact our front office before we can let other adults visit/release their child to them. For safety of all students, we will never allow non-parent/guardians to visit/pick-up students without prior permission.
Recess Before Lunch
See that photo at the top of the newsletter? Happy and hungry kids! Now a month into the school year, we are feeling confident that making the switch this year to having recess before lunch was a good move. Of course, when we have about 150 kids per grade all in the cafeteria together, we never expect it to sound like a tranquil spa! But that said, we have anecdotes from kids, staff, and families that support the decision. For example, there are fewer behavior issues at lunch and recess, kids are eating more of their meal, they are returning to class in the afternoon more calm, and more! We continue to appreciate the collaboration of our lunch/recess superivisors and our food service team as we work through glitches and kinks in the process as well.
Monthly Safety Drill: Evacuation Practice Last Week
CEPS students did a terrific job with our school safety drill this month: Evacuation. This year we are focused on reconvening a bit further away from the building in order to more closely replicate what we may need to do during an actual emergency. Please continue to reinforce with your students how important it is to keep a volume zero (no talking) so they can hear their teachers or emergency services announcements.

WI School Immunization Requirements & Vaccine Clinics
Every school in Wisconsin is required by law to report their student’s vaccination status to the local health department 30 days after the start of school. See WI Student Immunization Law by Age/Grade Requirements. Your student’s health assistant have sent out legal notices at that time if the school has no record or if your student’s immunization status is “behind schedule”. If you are not sure if your student is up to date with immunizations, you can contact your doctor's office/My chart or you can look them up on the Wisconsin Immunization Registry using your child's social security number and/or Medical ID. If you need access to a waiver (for personal, religious or health reasons) for any vaccination, please utilize the student immunization record (English, Spanish) see step 4 and return it to your student’s health office.
‼️ Please review DHS update regarding increased Pertussis cases in Wisconsin‼️
Vaccine Clinics: Public Health Madison & Dane County is partnering with surrounding school districts and SSM Health in a few weeks to offer more school vaccine clinics to get students up to date on their school vaccines in time for the 2024-25 school year. These clinics will take place at multiple locations and dates. Find more information and to schedule an appointment see the attached flyer (English, Spanish), or via publichealthmdc.com/schoolclinics.
District News
Bullying Prevention
Staff in the McFarland School District are committed to providing a safe, secure, and healthy environment that allows all students to maximize their learning potential. The board of education and school staff consider bullying to be detrimental to the health and safety of students and disruptive to the educational process.
What is bullying?
The Centers for Disease Control defines bullying as “any unwanted aggressive behavior(s) by another youth or group of youths, who are not siblings or current dating partners, that involves an observed or perceived power imbalance and is repeated multiple times or is highly likely to be repeated. Bullying may inflict harm or distress on the targeted youth including physical, psychological, social, or educational harm”.
Three consistent components of bullying are:
imbalance of physical or emotional power,
repeated across time or student who was bullied, and
intent to cause physical or emotional harm.
Bullying can be physical (e.g., hitting, kicking), verbal (e.g., name-calling, threatening), or social/relational (e.g., purposeful exclusion, spreading rumors) and can occur in person or electronically (cyberbullying).
Are staff trained?
Schools are successful when they help children grow academically, socially, and emotionally. For this to happen, it is imperative that we have a safe environment that is supportive and conducive to growth. By setting clear social and behavioral expectations, it is our goal to create an atmosphere for learning. The McFarland School District takes bullying very seriously, including all instances of perceived bullying. These are documented, investigated, and addressed by building administration and student services staff. Numerous efforts have been initiated with our student body and staff to bring greater awareness to this topic, which includes our efforts to continue developing stronger student to student and staff to student connections.
What can caregivers do?
To be most effective, bullying prevention efforts are the shared responsibility of caregivers, staff, and community. Caregiver involvement in the school sets a positive example for children. As a caregiver, you can:
Discuss the seriousness and negative effects of bullying behaviors.
Work together with the school to develop a consistent approach to bullying behaviors.
Set a good example. Children learn more by actions than from words.
Contact the school to report bullying concerns that your child shares with you.
What is school policy on bullying?
Here is more information about our bullying policy.
What bullying prevention work is being done?
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. During the month of October, each school will engage in a variety of learning opportunities regarding bullying prevention and reporting with our students. Beyond the month of October we will continue our commitment to social-emotional learning, diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts as these initiatives have a direct impact on maintaining a positive school climate for all students.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to the principal of your child’s school to share concerns and ideas and discuss this topic further
