Hispanic Heritage Month starts today
From September 15 to October 15, our country recognizes National Hispanic Heritage Month. This honors the histories, cultures and contributions of our students, staff and community members whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
Throughout the year, our students learn about cultures that have shaped our country's identity. Among the learning happening so far this year, Willowbrook previewed Hispanic Heritage Month on Sept. 1 during the school's Friday flag raising and Wescott has a beautiful library display full of books by Hispanic and Latino authors telling stories all can enjoy.
Next month, Maple's 8th Grade Spanish students will take part in a field trip to Chicago's Pilsen neighborhoo. They will experience authentic food, visit the Día de los Muertos exhibit at the National Museum of Mexican Art, and view the amazing and historic murals nearby. Students are encouraged to speak in Spanish with the community members they encounter.
Great Expectations at Maple
At Maple School, we are committed to providing our students with the skills they need to succeed not only in high school but also beyond. Developing strong executive functioning skills is crucial for their continued success.
We are providing students with helpful "reminders" to assist them in developing habits such as timeliness, preparing for class, being "TRRFCC" students (Trustworthy, Respectful, Responsible, Fair, Citizenship, and Caring), and following school expectations. Here is a copy of the classroom expectations we uphold across grade levels.
While we are striving to reinforce these practices during school hours, we understand that fostering these skills requires collaboration and communication between home and school. Thank you for your ongoing partnership, and we look forward to working together for the benefit of our students.

Appointment pick up reminders
Students are only to be picked up at our north Main Entrance and need to be signed out by a parent or guardian. Students are not allowed to ride their bikes home during school hours if they are leaving for an appointment during the school day, and we highly recommend picking up students no later than 3:15 p.m. due to the afternoon traffic pattern. Please plan accordingly.

Maple Book Drive
Maple School is partnering with the Northbrook Rotary and Bernie’s Book Bank to collect books for children in need. Please consider donating gently used children’s books, ages birth through sixth grade, to the book drive. There will be book drive bins located in the front office vestibule, near the activity doors, and in the library at Maple School from September 5-22.
Please view this letter and flyer for additional information. In addition, access this QR code to generate a tax receipt for your donation. The QR code will also be posted with each collection bin. Maple Parent/Teacher Advisory Council
Survey deadline is September 15
Our Maple Parent/Teacher Advisory Council is seeking parent members for the 2023-2024 school year. The Parent/Teacher Advisory Council (PTAC) has been created and designed to engage our learning community in discussion and dialogue about the education of our students. The PTAC focuses on topics regarding the school’s curriculum, programming, procedures and any other areas that may impact our students and their learning environment. Additionally, the Parent/Teacher Advisory Council will review and explore educational research and best practices relative to Maple School and the middle-level child.
We intend to maintain a 10- to 15-member council that is representative of the diversity of our Maple School community. Members of the Maple Parent/Teacher Advisory Council will be a well-informed group in order to provide support and guidance for our learning community during the school year.
Planned meeting dates are: October 9, 2023, December 11, 2023, February 26, 2024, and May 13, 2024 at 7:00-8:00 p.m. The meetings will be held in Maple School’s LMC.
If you are interested in serving on the Maple Parent/Teacher Advisory Council, please complete the PTAC Google Form by Friday, September 15.

Health exam requirements
6th-graders and students new to Maple are required to provide the school with a health exam, which was completed within one year prior to the first day of school. Students new to Illinois will need to hand in a completed eye exam. Sixth graders must also provide the school with a dental exam form or waiver. All forms are available on the Maple website.

Before any medication can be dispensed, the school must receive written instructions and a signed permission form from the student’s physician and parent. All medications must be properly labeled and kept in the Health Office. Parental permission must also be obtained for non-prescription medication.
