Veterans Day Commemoration
Mary Turner of the Evening Star Quilt Guild presents Atreyu Moore with a patriot quilt following his keynote address to the 2024 Red Wing Community Veterans Day Commemoration Nov. 8 at the high school.
'You can accomplish anything'
RWHS grad delivers keynote address
From self-described humble beginnings, Atreyu Moore enlisted in U.S. Army and entered boot camp at age 17. The son "of a dad from Mississippi and a mom from small-town Minnesota," was a sergeant in the elite 82nd Airborne by age 21 -- the youngest to achieve that rank in his division.
Who could have dreamed, the Red Wing High School graduate asked, that he would someday deliver a Veterans Day keynote address to a thousand people?
"I'm not nearly as decorated as those veterans you see in front of me today," he said, acknowledging the many veterans in seats of honor. "I still understand the sacrifices it takes ... . The willingness to answer your nation’s call is one that every veteran knows."
He urged students to embrace some of what the Army and his family taught him: approach life with a clear focus, create self-motivation and, when someone doubts your ability to fulfill a dream, quietly go about doing the work.
"Today I still try to hold myself to my highest standard," Moore said, who owns a small business and advises the RWHS Black Student Union.
He concluded by saying, “I believe you can accomplish anything in life you put your mind to, if you can be comfortable being uncomfortable,”
The colors are retired as the 2024 Veterans Day Commemoration concludes.

From greenhouse to café
On Monday, Nov. 11, FFA members and students in Bill Emery’s Greenhouse Tech course will begin their second harvest destined for the Red Wing High School café. The first took place Tuesday, Nov. 5.
The school-based agriculture project is an extension of the classroom, where students learn entrepreneurial skills, food production and food preparation. All Red Wing High School students potentially benefit because the fresh greens make their way to the lunch line, showing up in sandwiches and salads.
“We used special labels to alert students and staff that something special – grown right here – was on the menu,” Student Nutrition Services Director Jess Peña said. Before that could happen, the school's Greenhouse Tech program had to earn certification and create a food safety plan.
This project is a collaboration of the Farm to Table program. Learn about the nationwide initiative and Minnesota's involvement by clicking the link below.
