During the week of October 24 to October 27, Hale`iwa will be going through its WASC accreditation visit. WASC stands for Western Association of Schools and Colleges. All Hawaii DOE schools must be accredited by WASC.

Why is accreditation important?

Accreditation certifies that a school is trustworthy. It validates the integrity of the educational program. Accreditation also assures the community that the school is on the right track. Most importantly, the accreditation process guides school improvement so that the school ensures it is making the adjustments needed to best serve the needs of all of its students.

What is involved in the accreditation process?

The school must produce a self-study report. The report is written through teachers and other staff members collaborating on the different criteria from the WASC organization. After the self-study report is completed, it is sent to a WASC Visiting Committee. The Visiting Committee reads the report and then visits the school for 4 days. During the visit to the school, the Visiting Committee meets with various stakeholder groups: parents, community members, students, teachers and all other staff groups. The purpose of the visit is to validate the self-study report.

Hale`iwa's self-study report is almost finished. Our faculty and staff have been working diligently on the report for the past year and a half. In the coming weeks, we will be updating everyone about the different preparations we will be doing for our WASC visit. Preparing for the visit is a lot of work. Nonetheless, we are excited to share with our Visiting Committee the great work that our school has done for the last several years. We are also looking forward to implementing new processes and procedures to improve our school to better serve our students.

5th Grade Teacher

Education: BA in English from Lyon College, MA in English from Southeast Missouri State University, 45 graduate credits in Elementary Education and Mathematics Instruction from University of Colorado Denver, Early Language and Literacy Certificate from Adams State

Experience: I started my career and teaching with long-term subbing for 2 1/2 years in various grade levels from Kindergarten to fourth grade. Then I taught third grade for three years. During my fourth year of teaching, I was a half time instructional coach and half time classroom teacher. The following year, I worked as a half time instructional Coach and half time reading interventionist. Over the next five years, I taught third grade at international schools in Brazil for two years and in South Korea for three years. Last year, I worked as a full time instructional coach.

Who inspires you: People who have a passion to help others and make the world a better place.

I became an educator because I believe students need champions who believe in them, so they can learn to believe in themselves and feel pride when they learn something new or improve.

Kindergarten received an awesome new patio addition the back of their classrooms! To celebrate the first day of having it, we had a lemonade and cookie party. We’ve been using our patio daily since receiving it. We really enjoy being able to spend more class time outside!

As we enter another exciting week in school our Kindergartners have been thrilled about their new outside patio. Students now are able to take their learning outside and enjoy their new safe space. So far Ms. Mori's class has been able to take their journals outside to make some observations and work on their drawing and writing skills. We’re all excited to see the learning that will occur in our new space throughout the year. The opportunities for outside learning are endless with our new space.

The 4th Grade Class had a great time with Bike Ed Hawaii. Students learned the fundamentals of the bicycle, how to safely and properly ride their bikes in the community, and it was fun to get out in the sun and get some good exercise! The 4th Graders learned that it is important to always watch the road and to always wear a helmet while you are riding your bike.
