7th and 8th Grade Cell Phone Policy
This notice is to inform you of our middle school cell phone policy at Starr King TK-8. The policy is aimed towards eliminating cell phone related issues that occur throughout the day and towards protecting the classroom environment as a place of learning.
- Cell phone use will not be permitted in any way during class time.
- Cell phones may only be used during morning break , provided that they are used appropriately, respectfully, responsibly, and safely.
- Music may be listened to during morning break, so long as earbuds or headphones are used and their volume is kept at a respectful level (no one else should be able to hear it).
- Cell phones are not allowed to be used during lunch.
- Taking videos or pictures of other students without their consent is a violation of this policy.
Furthermore, Starr King continues to not be responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged property, so if you are concerned for the safety of your student’s cell phone, please have them leave it at home.
The consequence for failing to adhere to this policy will go as follows:
● Teacher asks student to hand over phone
- ○ Teacher holds the phone for the rest of the day
- ● If student refuses to hand over phone to the teacher
- ■ Administration comes and takes phone
- ■ A call home is made to parent
- ■ Parent must pick up phone
- ■ Upon pickup administration reviews the cell phone contract
- ■ Phone must then be checked in and out daily for a length of time determined during meeting with parents

Volunteer at Starr King!
The district values and encourages the assistance of parents/guardians and other members of the community in sharing their special knowledge and abilities with our students in roles as classroom assistants, art docents, reading tutors and in other areas. The district also welcomes volunteer improvement projects (self-help projects) that enhance the classroom or school, such as beautification projects, painting and gardening. Use of volunteers in services to the school district must comply with laws, regulations and policies.
To ensure a positive experience and protect the safety of our students, staff and others the district implements a volunteer verification process.
All volunteers must complete the one time volunteer verification process BEFORE they can be allowed to volunteer on a school campus or at a school-related activity. Duplicate applications will not be processed.
To begin the volunteer verification process, please visit: https://www.sanjuan.edu/connect/volunteer
Attendance Matters!
Student success starts with good attendance and is the responsibility of the student, family, and school. The U.S. Department of Education reports that for every missed day of school, it takes a student two days to catch up since he/she must make up missed learning and catch up with new learning at the same time.
Parents can help their children be successful by encouraging regular attendance. Regular attendance has been linked to higher achievement, stronger bonds to the school and community, lower rates of delinquent and high-risk behavior, and increased participation in higher education.
Parents have a vital role in ensuring and promoting regular attendance at school. Regular attendance is necessary for success in school, and as a parent, you are the key person who can make a difference. The earlier a student sets a pattern of going to school, the better they will do throughout their school career. Students who attend regularly are the least likely to drop out of school.
We ask that families support efforts to increase attendance by making a conscientious effort to:
- Ensure students arrive at school and class on time.
- Plan family vacations during non-school days and summer break.
- Try to schedule doctor appointments for your child after school hours.
- Bring your child to school before and after appointments that are scheduled during the school day.
- Only allow your child to stay home when he/she has a contagious illness or is too sick to attend school.
To report absences, please contact our Attendance Line (call or email if your child will not be at school) - 916-979-8153 or starrkingabsence@sanjuan.edu
