Dear Families,
Our first day drumming with Stuart Paton of Burlington Taiko was wonderful. It’s always so lovely to watch how eagerly the students carry themselves in anticipation of this residency - big movement, big vibrations, and intense group focus and intellectual engagement. Stuart is a highly skilled teacher and students come away from each session feeling energized and successful.
A reminder: makeup: As stated in the handbook, makeup is not allowed at school. This includes the school bus where some students are applying it to others. Makeup is one of those fascinations that results in considerable peer pressure and confusion. We will be talking all of this through in school as well. Thanks.
Taiko schedule for next week:

Lunch volunteers: We need sign-ups next week for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Barbara will be back January 29! If you can volunteer for any of these days, please email me cjohnston@acsdvt.org or sign up directly on the calendar. If you can sign-up for the weeks ahead it would be very helpful.
January progress reports will be sent home in your child’s backpack next Friday, Jan. 31.
This report is a summary of your child’s learning and development to date and will focus on students’ progress toward meeting end-of-year grade level standards. In addition to academic progress, students’ progress relative to the Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills is reported.
Prior to reading the progress summary it is helpful to review the description of the assessment criteria found in the report.
Teachers will be reaching out to you by phone in the next two weeks to answer any clarifying questions about your child’s progress.
My husband finally made it out of the hospital this Thursday and into a care home in Winchester, UK. My plan is to head back to the UK next Thursday afternoon (1/30) and then to bring him home the following week. I will be out 1/30-2/7. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me via email. Samantha and I will be in close contact over this time. I have so appreciated your thoughtfulness and well-wishes. Thank you.
Best, Christina

Icing Containers Wanted!
In the 2-3 Classroom, we have been testing ideas for simple, inexpensive water bottle holders attached to student desks. (We often have quiet, focused work sessions interrupted with the Clunk-Clankety-Clank of metal water bottles falling onto the floor.)
After collecting ideas all summer and testing a few prototypes, we have a design that seems to work pretty well-- an old icing container attached to the desk with velcro. (Thank you, Erica Castle, for suggesting the velcro!)
Now we need more icing containers!
If you ice a cake, please save your icing containers for us!
The 2-3 class thanks you!

Here is a guide for students to know what clothing choices to make. We will be using this guide to teach students about weather and being prepared to go outside for recess each day.
Thank you to FOWE for the new sleds
