The Viking Spotlight is the part in my weekly newsletter used to highlight and celebrate our students and staff anytime we can! Shoutout to all of our students who participated in the District Science Fair last week, but an extra special kudos to the MVA students who earned awards! Congratulations to Jaedin Asada on earning 2nd place and Jovanni Castro on earning 3rd place at the annual SUHSD Science Fair! We are so proud of you and couldn't be more excited that you did such a great job on your projects and representing MVA!

February has flown by, and before we know it, we’ll be heading into the final stretch of the school year! This Friday, February 28th, marks the release of the first progress report of 2025, giving students and families a clear picture of academic progress so far. If you are behind in any classes, now is the time to turn things around! I can't emphasize enough that students should take advantage of the tutoring opportunities available after school and also on Saturdays. We have a teacher and two bilingual tutors available each day to support our students!

Also, another reminder that Credit recovery is up and running, and attendance is mandatory for those who need it. Students who do not complete their credit recovery will not have another opportunity to make up the credit, which may result in being ineligible to participate in the 8th grade Promotion ceremony. Let’s stay focused, finish strong, and make the most of the time we have left this semester!

For the first time in SUHSD's history, the BSUs at all schools are collaborating to host a districtwide Black History Month Spirit Week! We hope you all participate to not only show your school pride, but also to show your support for our Black and African American students and staff as we honor Black History Month!

Our next Coffee with the Principal is this Thursday, Feb. 27th. After a brief update from Ms. Scott, parents will be able to hear a presentation from the county on current drug trends. The Sweetwater Union High School District is requesting the input of parents, students, classified staff, certified staff, and administrative staff in the goals and actions of the 2025-26 Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). We need your valuable feedback to evaluate our progress within the state’s priorities and to evaluate and create the 2025-26 LCAP. Please complete the survey below no later than February 28, 2025.

Please note: We have added a new Saturday Academy date on 3/8. Please mark your calendars if your child has tardies or absences they need to make up.

A reminder about Credit Recovery for all students missing credits because they failed a class in 7th or 8th grade. Students and parents received an email via Jupiter Grades if they were in need of Credit Recovery for US History, English 7, Math 7, Math 8, and/or World Cultures. Please read the email carefully and reach out to the counseling center for more information.

Please note: Students are automatically enrolled in Credit Recovery so they should show up regardless of whether or not they turned in the contract.

Remember, in order to participate in the 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony, students must pass ALL of their classes!!! If you have any questions, please email our counselor at nancy.schmerbauch@sweetwaterschools.org.

Just a friendly reminder that we are using the Semester 1 final grades for the current Non-Privilege List. To refresh your memories, students on the NPL are not allowed to attend rallies, school dances, and other extra-curricular activities due to one or more of the following reasons:

• Earning one or more D’s or F’s in Citizenship on the Semester 1 Report Card

• Earning frequent disciplinary detentions

• Suspended from school from November 1- December 20.

• Excessive number of tardies (12+) from November 4-December 20.

Students remain on the NPL until the next round of grades, in this case, the next progress report is on February 28th. So, if you're on the NPL now, make sure you do what you need to do to get off of it by the time grades come out next Friday! If you have any questions, please ask an administrator.

All students must complete Online Registration each year. The window to submit the yearly Online Registration opened on Monday, January 27, 2025. The sooner you get it done, the better! Click the button below that applies to you for more information on registration.

It's the final night of Southwestern College's South Bay Black Family Listening Tour, so if you haven't attended yet, don't miss out! Join us in this safe space to engage in discussions about our shared experiences as students/parents of Black or African descent in the South Bay. This event is open to all South Bay families, and will be followed by collaborative planning of solutions and next steps. We hope to see you there!

This FREE program will focus on physical activity and leadership through various traditional and non-traditional sports.

Participants will learn about healthy lifestyles through proven curriculum developed by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).

SUHSD's Adelante Latino Committee is excited to announce that registration is now open for the 27th Annual Adelante Latino Conference. The conference will take place, Saturday, March 1st at UCSD. Free Transportation will be provided for the event.

Time: 8:00 AM-12:00 PM

Location: Southwest High School

Students will be rotating through four dynamic stations daily - STEM, ART, Fitness and SEL activities.
