Growing Our Own: Education and Training Program Encourages Former Students to Return to Teach in District
From kindergarten through senior year and now teaching at the elementary level, at only 25 years old, Kambree Stewart is in her 15th year in Wylie ISD. Stewart completed the Education and Training Program of Study, WE Teach, at Wylie East High School and now teaches third grade at Birmingham Elementary.
“The education program put me way above my peers in college and is no doubt one of the best things to happen to me for my career,” Stewart said.
In Wylie ISD’s Education and Training Program of Study, a public service endorsement in the Career and Technical Education program, high school students receive real-world experience in Wylie ISD classrooms. Students complete this pathway with more than 200 hours of classroom experience in the education field. Many of them return to this very district to teach.

Activities for Davis Students Simulate Real-Life Experiences
The month of December provides ample opportunities for students in FASE (Functional Academics in a Structured Environment) at Davis Intermediate to practice real-life situations while spreading a little Christmas cheer. The FASE program provides a learning environment that is appropriate and individualized for each student's developmental and functional level.
Special education teacher Elisabeth Cadena recently organized a potato sale. The students in FASE prepared the potatoes and all the fixings, then delivered the baked potatoes to each teacher who purchased one.
“The baked potato sale went very smoothly,” Cadena said. “Our students learned how to use a visual grocery list to grocery shop. They learned how to properly package condiments for each order. They learned how to clean and wrap potatoes. They even learned how to deliver to each teacher that ordered. It is such an amazing process.”

Students Express Positive Relationships with Staff in Surveys
Receiving a handwritten note has become a rarity; however, thousands of them were recently dispersed to teachers and staff throughout Wylie ISD. As part of the Caring & Giving core value, The Wylie Way spreads positivity with its relationship survey. Every year, fifth through 12th grade students are asked to write to a teacher whom they feel they have a positive relationship with.
“I received relationship surveys from students I never thought would write me one,” Cornel Walton, Draper Intermediate social studies teacher, said. “It was a great reminder of why I love this job.”
From simply asking about their day to being a person they can turn to for advice, students feel connected to their teachers for a variety of reasons.
