HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Welcome back to a brand new year! I hope your holidays and time together with family and friends were rewarding and restful. A new year is an appropriate time to ponder previous accomplishments and to set new goals; personal and academic.


Encourage our students to think over the last year about what was difficult, and is now easier or has improved. For example, reading a chapter book, tying shoes, making a basket in basketball, meeting a new friend, memorizing all math facts, etc. Next, commend him/her for the grit and perseverance that was necessary to achieve these goals. Remind them of times when they could not do specific tasks. These are quality traits that will serve our students well in college, careers, and as citizens. Then, help our children think about new goals to set and begin to plan the steps to achieve them. For example, plan to read one more chapter/book a day, practice a skill without coach/teacher directing, reach out to a student he/she doesn't know, never say "I can't", always say "I'll keep trying', or try something completely new and a little bit scary or uncomfortable.


These ideas can help our students to grow and develop into risk taking, persevering, and 'sky's the limit' human beings who will creatively solve problems for all of our futures.

Mrs. Koelewyn - 5th Grade Teacher

Ms. Koelewyn earned her B.A. and M.A. in psychology while attending Calvin College and CSU Sacramento. She opened the doors at Valley View 18 years ago! Her love of U.S. history takes her traveling to many historic sites. She also enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and pets!

Ms. Snyder - 5th Grade Teacher

Ms. Snyder first began teaching preschool, but then moved into elementary after completing her degrees at both CSU Sacramento and Chapman University. This is her 6th year of teaching with RUSD. In her spare time, she adores cats and volunteers at local feline center!

Mrs. Sellers - 4th-6th Grade Special Day Teacher

Motivated by her own teachers as a child, Mrs. Sellers pursued teaching after some time in social work. She earned her degree in psychology and social work from CSU Sacramento. Mrs. Sellers lives in the Auburn area and enjoys family time, tent camping, and other outdoor activities.

Mrs. Wagner - 2nd Grade Teacher

Mrs. Wagner obtained her degrees from University of Nevada at Reno with a focus on elementary education and literacy studies. She has been teaching for 21 years. When not in her classroom, she enjoys her family, yoga, paddle boarding, and exploring new places! (little secret....Mrs. Wagner attended RUSD schools as a student! :))

Mrs. Young - 2nd Grade Teacher

Mrs. Young earned her degrees at Cal Poly, SLO and CSU Sacramento. She is in her 22nd year of teaching which followed her first career in social work. Favorite interests and hobbies include theater, kayaking, traveling, and spending time with family and friends!

Ms. Parr - 2nd Grade Teacher

Ms. Parr achieved her degrees in the areas of Early Childhood Education and Liberal Studies at CSU Chico. She began in preschool and has been teacher elementary children for 25 years. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, kayaking, and visiting national parks!

Three times a year, we hold an assembly to share all that we did in the trimester and to recognize Cubs who exemplify the Cubs' Code of Conduct. Check out the presentation!

ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT FOR STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE, BUT...

Please do what you can to keep our children healthy. Dress them warmly for the cold weather and make sure they have hats and gloves. Encourage them to wash their hands regularly, get plenty of rest, and eat healthy. Together we can help our child learn to persevere.
