What's new with Watkins Middle?
A weekly reflection and preview of all things WMS
WMS updates and reminders
- Thursday marks the end of the second grading period. There is no school for students Friday 1/17 (Staff development day) or Monday 1/20 (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day).
- This Tuesday evening is our winter Theater Night. If you're able we invite you to come out at 6pm to see some of the skills our first semester students have been working on. See the flier below for details.
- If your child is a rising seventh or eighth grader and has demonstrated a gift for Math please consider filling out this Algebra readiness survey. With limited seats available this readiness assessment will assist in the process of identifying students for Math courses next year. Students currently taking Pre-Algebra will automatically be placed in Algebra 1 next year.
- During the first semester our building has been working on grading alignment. This grading document provides an overview of the adjustments that will be implemented effective 3rd quarter (1/22), and serve as grading guidelines for the building. The largest shift will be the move away from the 50% grade floor for 8th graders during the second semester. This will be implemented in preparation for high school grading practices. Students have been informed of these changes during class meetings.
- Have you missed any previous newsletters? You can always look on our school website to find archived newsletters to catch up on all things Watkins Middle School.
Choir holiday concerts
The WMS concert choir was able to visit multiple senior citizen living facilities to perform for the residents during the holiday seasons. Students were able to perform and meet so many wonderful individuals.
New Year and future planning
Students were welcomed back into the building from winter break with class meetings. 6th & 7th graders received an overview of future scheduling information from our guidance team. 8th grade students will begin the high school scheduling process during the week of the 21st.
Orchestra
January is off to a great start in Middle School Orchestra, students have been hard at work learning new skills.
Surviving Middle School for Parents
This month's topic is response inhibition. Many students who engage in risky behavior or decision making struggle in this area. See our info graphic for some helpful tips to support your child.
