ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
STUDENT OF THE WEEK K-2
Zeke Hopkins, Kindergarten (Mrs. Amanda)
Zeke is ALWAYS ready to learn and respectful to his class family! He is a great example of panther pride!
STUDENT OF THE WEEK 3-5
Let's hear it for Layla Aguila!
Layla is an extraordinary example of a student that truly embodies the five iBelieve behavior expectations. Layla really shines when it comes to BE Responsible. She holds herself and classmates accountable, but in a way that supports her peers. Layla follows classroom and school expectations the first time and models this behavior for others. She is also organized, which helps her make sure she is completing and turning in her work on time. Layla is a student who works hard to positively resolve any conflicts, while still being a friend to all her peers.
MIDDLE SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
STUDENT OF THE WEEK 6-8
Mako Savage is the middle school PBIS Student of the Week!
He always follows directions, always tries his best, and is a leader in the classroom! Keep up the great work, Mako!
Corn Mazes
Mrs. Boyd's STEM class learned about how real corn mazes are created and used the engineering design process to create their own maze. Elementary students came to the cafeteria to try out their creations using marbles to see how they worked.
Basketball Tryouts!
If you are interested in playing basketball for PKS, here are the tryout dates:
Boys: 11/4 and 11/5
Girls: 11/6
Completed packets and physicals MUST be completed prior to try outs.
Media Center/Readers are Leaders
READERS ARE LEADERS
Celebrated Constitution Week in many ways. One way was when we celebrated the Bill of Rights. The students created a “Future Me” character, based on what they would like to be when they grow up.
We also celebrated the Cool Beans book theme that being kind and helpful is what makes a good friend. The Readers are Leaders program teaches CARE throughout the school year.
C = Caring
A = Adaptable
R = Respectful
E = Empathetic
The book teaches that being kind and helpful is what makes a good friend. It also reminds readers that all kids can be cool if they're kind.
The students wrote sentences like “I’m cool because I am nice.” “I’m a Cool Bean because I am honest.” “I’m a Cool Bean because I am fantastic at Math, I’m fun to play with, and I am kind.”
I am excited to bring Mel Fisher Maritime Museum to Plantation Key School. I am especially excited because the museum is featuring The Bermuda Triangle, a mystery we all love! The Mel Fisher Maritime Museum’s mission is to research, interpret, and exhibit the maritime history of Florida and the Caribbean in ways that increase knowledge, enrich the spirit, and stimulate inquiry. They are located in Key West and do a different museum every year. Students will have a chance to visit the museum in Media Center and complete activities and view a variety of companion videos. Contact Dr. Cash if you would like to come visit the museum.
Brain Games
Students are encouraged to engage with challenging games, like chess. Often I have puzzles or other Brain Games. If you have a game you would like to donate, let me know!
Our first challenge for grades K-5 launches this week. We are going to “partner” with Spookley, the Square Pumpkin who speaks out against bullying. Mrs. Hillman will also be working with the students, and we are celebrating Unity Day by wearing orange on October 16th. People wear orange on Unity Day to show support for bullying prevention and to send a message that all youth should be safe from bullying.
Monroe County School District launched A Culture of Literacy, which I mentioned in the Newsletter, October is Batty about Books. Bats are amazing animals! For the challenge, have your child, K – 5, tell me a “bat fact” and they can color in one portion of the challenge paper. I will ask your child’s teacher to send to you electronically. Kindergarten students received their Readers are Leaders lanyards today!
