Greetings MVCSD Community,

Now at the end of its inaugural school year, Rebecca Turner Academy has announced fantastic students as valedictorian and salutatorian. Marlene Coronado and Blessin Allen displayed hard work, commitment and perseverance to reach this milestone, and they deserve all of the praise for their success. Thank you to the faculty at RTA for your commitment to all of your students. I am so proud to see the success coming out of RTA, and I am excited to see it continue. Good luck in your studies Marlene and Blessin and continue to be an example of what is possible when you work toward your goals.

Denzel Washington School of the Arts has also announced their valedictorian and salutatorian this week. Chanel Baxter and Brielle Henderson are very passionate young women and have had continued success to earn this accomplishment. They have been heavily involved with their school community from the start, and their dedication to their academics and their passions have propelled them to great heights already. These students show just how much you can achieve when you push yourself and put in the maximum effort.

Schools across the District have been learning about and celebrating Juneteenth this week. They have learned important historical lessons about the significance of the date, and our teachers have done a great job of teaching them the reason why we celebrate. With a true understanding of Juneteenth, our students honored the holiday with parties, a parade and commemorative artwork. It is important for our students to have an understanding of all of the history of our nation, and each of our schools did a great job of instilling that knowledge in them.

Tomorrow we will hold our first high school commencement ceremony at Denzel Washington School of the Arts. Our students have worked so hard to get to this point, and these next few days will be a culmination and celebration of their work. I am excited to see all of our graduates walk across the stage with their proud families watching.

Schools across the Mount Vernon City School District celebrated Juneteenth and learned about the significance of the date during the week of Monday, June 17, 2024. Students made signs, walked in a parade and had lessons about the history of Juneteenth.
