An Unwavering Commitment to Each Student
Greetings, Thompson Community:
February is an eclectic month filled with, to name a few, Valentineโs Day, the Super Bowl, Groundhog Day, Chinese New Year, Black History Month, and even the lesser known Pay a Compliment Day!
Each month, I have the opportunity to share with our community the incredible and extraordinary things that our nearly 15,000 students accomplish in the classrooms, in the arts, through athletics and activities, and even within our community. We are proud of our students, and proud of their journeys and their achievements as they matriculate from early childhood through high school and beyond. These achievements and celebrations are only realized through the collective efforts and dedication of our incredible staff, our supportive parents and guardians, our business, educational, religious and nonprofit partners, as well as our caring and engaged community.
Our work in Thompson School District is anchored in our Strategic Plan, Strive 2025, as well as within our Portrait of a Graduate. These documents are more than words on a page; they are commitments and assurances to our students, our parents, and our community members that the work we do in TSD is important, necessary, and foundational in preparing our students to be college, career and community ready. This school district also has a deep and unwavering commitment to our equity principles that are not only found within Board of Education policy, but are also entrenched within the work we do each and every day. These principles focus on the value and dignity of each of our students by creating environments that are safe and supportive, and are designed to meet their educational, mental health and social-emotional needs. Our equity policy recognizes that all of our students have worth, and all of our students have the right to access and pursue their educational journeys in safe, supportive and inclusive environments.
Our students continue to thrive and achieve, from outstanding student growth and achievement to strong graduation rates and a myriad of post-secondary placements ranging from college options to workforce options and the military. The educational journey begins in Early Childhood where our students exhibit curiosity and the development of school-readiness skills all the way through their elementary, middle, and high school experiences. Our district also works hard to cultivate business partnerships, create real-world learning opportunities, and provide experiences through the arts, athletics, and co-curricular activities. We aim to be a full-service, fully immersive experience for each of our students.
We affirm to our community that Thompson School District is a place where students can and will learn, develop and thrive. We will prepare our students to be outstanding citizens, self-advocates, critical thinkers, effective communicators and collaborators. We recognize and understand that our students have unique needs. We also understand that our students are individuals, who have a name, have a story, have a history, and have worth. Most importantly, our students have dreams and aspirations for their futures, and it is incumbent on us as a school district and a community to help them reach their fullest and best potentialโ without barriers or burdens.
In closing, as the proudest Superintendent in the state of Colorado, I want to continue to reaffirm our districtโs commitment to supporting each of our students โ every day โ from January through December. I am deeply grateful and appreciative of our incredible staff, our supportive parents and guardians, and our amazing community. Together, Thompson School District will deliver on meeting the needs of each of our students!
Sincerely,
Dr. Marc Schaffer
Superintendent

TSD Safety & Security Piloting New Technology, Hosting Training Day for Staff
The TSD Safety and Security team has been hard at work partnering with schools and local partners to support keeping our district safe! Coming up is the second annual Safety and Security Training Day. Last year Safety and Security partnered with the School Resource Officer team to facilitate a conference-style training event that covered a variety of safety topics and concluded with a "live drill" that simulated a critical event occurring at our schools. This training was a very beneficial experience for many members of our district and is being offered again this year.
Additionally, the Safety and Security team is always reviewing best practices and other safety strategies used across the nation. Through this work the Safety and Security team was able to identify the benefit of utilizing weapon detection technology in our school district. Safety and Security reviewed data and practice of multiple districts from all over the country and recently completed a pilot deployment at a Thompson Valley High School sporting event. The feedback from students, staff, and the community was positive as this technology was seen as an effective way to increase the physical security of our school district. Safety and Security is continuing to work with different building leaders to expand this process to better support our students, staff, and community. If you have questions about this technology, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the TSD Safety and Security team!
KidsPak 8th Annual Food Drive: Feeding the Future
KidsPak will host its annual food drive coming up at Loveland King Soopers, Safeways, Walmarts, Samโs Club, and at Berthoud Hays Market.
Dates are:
February 28 9:00am-6:00pm
March 1 9:00am-6:00pm
March 2 9:00am-4:00pm
Volunteers will be in stores to provide a shopping list and receive the purchased items. With a goal of 43,000 pounds of food, KidsPak is hoping to surpass last year's total of 40,000 pounds generously donated by our community.
KidsPak was created in 2009 after a national news story highlighted the pervasive issue of weekend hunger in school students. In 2009, KidsPak served 34 students in three TSD elementary schools. Today, KidsPak delivers weekend food bags to 675 students per week in 36 schools within the district. Bags are also available at the Loveland Library, Salvation Army, Sunrise Health Clinic, Berthoud Library and Project Self-Sufficiency.
KidsPak is looking for volunteers to be greeters in the stores and to be drivers and assistants for the food drive. See below for more information or to volunteer:

Celebrating Black History Month
February is Black History Month, a designated month of celebration of the achievements, culture, and contributions of Black Americans in the U.S. Teachers can highlight the stories of Black leaders, innovators, and activists, so our students gain valuable insights into the diverse and rich history that continues to shape our collective future.
