1st Marking Report Cards - Coming Soon
The end of the 1st marking period is October 25th and Teacher Grades are due on Friday, November 1st. After we also get grades from our outside partners (i.e. GCI, Mott, U of M, etc.) we will release grades via Parent Vue/Student Vue.
Remember, 1st marking period grades are worth 40% of the semester grade. Semester grades are determined as follows: 1st mp (40%) + 2nd mp (40%) + Semester Exams (20%) = Overall semester grade. Example grade calculation using 75% 1st marking period and 80% second marking period and a 70% on semester exam grade ; (.75)(.40) + (.80)(.40) + (.70)(.20) = .30 + .32 + .14 = .76 = 76% or C for the overall semester grade.
1st marking period (8/22 - 10/25/24) = 40% of 1st semester grade
2nd marking period (10/30 - 1/17/25) = 40% of 1st semester grade
Semester Exams (January 15, 16, & 17, 2025) = 20% of 1st semester grade
Overall semester grades are what gets put on the official transcript in January.
FHS Theater Presents....
The Greek Mythology Olympiaganza, audiences are treated to a classical education, rendered within a contemporary context, and presented in an unconventional manner utilizing interactive participation, elements of slapstick, and general theatrical insanity.
Two battling narrators attempt to both educate and entertain by offering their interpretations of such famous myths as Pandora’s Box, Jason & the Argonauts, and Hercules, with this entire melee culminating in a bizarre, musical dance-influenced version of The Iliad, guaranteed to provide a wild and fun-filled ride for audiences of all ages.

Reminder to Call In Absences (By Noon the Day After An Absence)
Parents:
We know you get busy, but at the high school level, students who accumulate over 10 days of absences during a semester, especially when those absences are unexcused, have to appeal for their credit at the end of the semester.
Please don't put yourself and your child in that situation. Be sure to call when they are out absent or by noon the next day (after you receive the robocall to remind you).
Thanks.

Positivity Project (aka P2) Theme of the Week - OPM - Knowing My Words & Actions Affect Others
This week, our school community will focus on the Other People Mindset of Knowing That My Words and Actions Affect Others, which means having an awareness that everything that we say and do can affect others — and our relationships with them.
Whether we speak, email, text, or post, our words and actions can have a positive or negative effect. The words and actions we choose can lift others up or bring them down, and they also impact us. When we all think carefully about our words and actions and show respect and care for those around us, we create a happier and healthier community.

Rough Riders of 1898 take to the FHS Halls
The most famous of all the units fighting in Cuba, the "Rough Riders" was the name given to the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt resigned his position as Assistant Secretary of the Navy in May 1898 to join the volunteer cavalry. The original plan for this unit called for filling it with men from the Indian Territory, New Mexico, Arizona, and Oklahoma. However, once Roosevelt joined the group, it quickly became the place for a mix of troops ranging from Ivy League athletes to glee-club singers to Texas Rangers and Indians.
Roosevelt and the commander of the unit Colonel Leonard Wood trained and supplied the men so well at their camp in San Antonio, Texas, that the Rough Riders were allowed into the action, unlike many other volunteer companies. They went to Tampa at the end of May and sailed for Santiago de Cuba on June 13. There they joined the Fifth Corps, another highly trained, well supplied, and enthusiastic group consisting of excellent soldiers from the regular army and volunteers.
The Rough Riders saw battle at Las Guásimas when General Samuel B. M. Young was ordered to attack at this village, three miles north of Siboney on the way to Santiago. Although it was not important to the outcome of the war, news of the action quickly made the papers. They also made headlines for their role in the Battle of San Juan Hill, which became the stuff of legend thanks to Roosevelt's writing ability and reenactments filmed long after.
Students in Mrs. Gray's U.S. History classes "took to the halls" earlier this week to help bring to life this piece of U.S. History.

Genesee Youth Commission
Are you, or do you know, a high school student that is looking to change the world for the better? Or young people who are very engaged in politics? Young people have innovative ideas and aren’t mired in the cynicism of so many adults. We want engaged young people to apply for the Genesee County Youth Commission.
The Genesee County Board of Commissioners and Michigan State University Extension 4-H Youth Development programs are collaborating to create an advisory group. These youth will learn about county government, share concerns with the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, and work to improve our community.
Youth Commission members will meet twice monthly, usually on the 1st & 2nd Wednesday of the month from 4-5:30 at the Genesee County Administration Building from January through June. The program will also include a trip to Lansing. There is no cost to participate, but students are expected to be fully engaged, and will need to take care of their own transportation.
Please apply at https://forms.gle/ZcsH9CcurtmPYjnQ9 by December 1st. We will be selecting one high-school age youth from each County Commissioner’s district. If you have more questions, contact Darren Bagley at bagleyda@msu.edu.
