Joyfully Embracing Our Mission
St. Clare School Family News | 17 May 2020
Come! Live in the Light!
You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.
~ Matthew 5:13-16
Dear St. Clare School Families,
Today, Sr. Ann Marie, Ms. Cherell and Mr. Rizzo and Mr. Mantecon and I traveled a combined 200+ miles to deliver care packages and lawn signs to our beloved Class of 2020. We started at school at 11 A.M. to prepare the bags, filled with loving contributions from teachers and administrators. The bags contained a Prayer Book personalized by Mr. Payne, a greeting card addressed by Miss Kim with handwritten notes from me, Sr. Ann Marie and Mrs. Filion, their 8th grade class art projects from Mrs. Talbott, balloons, a souvenir card and a bubble stick.
It was great to see our graduating 8th graders and their families whom we’ve missed so much. After a combined 14 hours, we are home and ready to share some of the photos we took from Fremont to the hills of Almaden and back. It was worth every mile to let them know that we care! We will continue our celebrations with Wednesday’s Capstone Project presentations, some video send-off messages from each student throughout the next nine days and finally, a Zoom Baccalaureate Mass and graduation ceremony on May 29. They will be dropping off their books and iPads and picking up their diplomas shortly after the ceremony.
We will miss the light that they have been to our community. Congratulations on nearly completing your journey at St. Clare School, Class of 2020!
FR. TAD ANNOUNCES HIS NEW ASSIGNMENT AT 9 A.M. MASS
If you joined us this morning for Sunday mass via Facebook Live, you heard Fr. Tad’s announcement that he will be leaving St. Clare on June 30 to begin a new assignment at another parish in the Diocese of San Jose. Fr. Tad served as parochial vicar while I was at St. Mary in Gilroy and then we had an opportunity to work together again at the Cathedral when my family and I moved to San Jose. He is a good friend and I will miss working in this ministry with him. However, I know that he will stay in touch and that we will celebrate him before he moves on!
Fr. Tad also announced that Msgr. Fran Cilia will begin as pastor of St. Clare on July 1st. Although I did not work with Msgr. Cilia in Gilroy, he was pastor there years before we moved to Gilroy and before he joined Bishop McGrath’s Chancery team. (He and Sr. Bette Gambonini were part of a team there.) Monsignor and I worked at the Chancery for four years while I was in the Dept. of Education (now Dept. of Catholic Schools). He is a product of Catholic schools and is one of its biggest cheerleaders. He brings a wealth of experience and is excited to walk the Catholic school journey with us. Many of you have worked with him and some remember him from his early days at St. Joseph in Mountain View, celebrating mass for Msgr. Gene O'Donnell at St. Francis of Assisi and at the Cathedral, along with other parishes in the Diocese of San Jose. As Fr. Tad asked the assembly this morning, let us warmly welcome Msgr. Fran to St. Clare!

CELEBRATING SR. ANN MARIE
This weekend would have been the weekend we celebrated Sr. Ann Marie for her three plus decades of service at St. Clare. Although we won't have a date until we are allowed to gather, we will definitely keep you posted. Even though her last "official" day at St. Clare is June 30th, Sr. Ann Marie anticipates being in the Bay Area through late Fall early winter. We will have plenty more opportunities to see her around reading to the children or chatting with parents once we return onsite!
As today’s gospel reminded us, the Father has sent an Advocate to help us remember that Christ is always with us. May we be open to the stirrings of the Holy Spirit to give us the courage, compassion and strength to overcome challenges and persevere through this difficult time.
Be kind to yourself and know that you have this community to help see you through this!
Peace and all good things,
Cecile Mantecon, Principal
