Beverly Cleary Connection

Another partial week in the books- and it wouldn't be the start to the year without a few bizarre scenarios. This week, staff and students really began settling into routines, and our parent volunteers continued to rock it at lunch duty this week! Our Instructional Learning Team met this week and created routines and protocols for upcoming professional learning communities (a weekly time for teachers to unpack units, lessons, and analyze data). Our Climate Team also met this week and set a focus on schoolwide and classroom agreements and expectations for the month of September. We also had our first assembly of the year! The counseling team reminded students of how to earn Cougar Paws and Cougar Roars and even put our new teacher, Mr. Hamler, on the hot seat! On Thursday, we completed our first fire drill- the building was cleared in 2:31, so now we have a time to beat (while still ensuring composure upon exiting). I think I speak for most of the staff when I say the students crushed it!

Next week, we have many things to look forward to! The first PTA meeting of the year is Monday followed by the PTA sponsored Sparky's Pizza fundraiser on Tuesday. The PTA sponsored Ice Cream Social was rescheduled to Thursday, and I'm so excited to join- it's one of my favorite events for engaging with the community. Next week, we will host our first Coffee Talk of the year in the cafeteria at 9:00 AM. The plan is to host it on the second Friday of each month, so be sure to pencil it in if you can make it!

I hope you have a great weekend and find ways to stay cool. I plan to watch our students play football on Saturday (my AZ blood loves this heat) and have high hopes to paint our guest bedroom on Sunday in preparation for my best friend flying to Portland for the first time ever next weekend! Feel free to send any must-do's my way.

The Library is in need of volunteers to help with shelving and possibly assisting students when they are "shopping for books."

Grandparents or special friends are welcome to sign up too. Light lifting is involved. Check the link here for Monday and Friday shifts that might match your availability. This signup will be updated quarterly with reminders when new shifts are available. As always, all volunteers must be up to date with background checks. In celebration of continued fun with reading over the summer, we are encouraging all students who have this year or previous year's Multnomah County Library's summer reading t-shirts to wear them on Wed. Sept. 18 to school.
