DRAGON DISPATCH
Daybreak Primary Family Newsletter - May 3, 2024
PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
Dear Daybreak Primary Families:
Last May we were thanking the families who had been involved in the initial steps of establishing a Daybreak Primary PTO. Fast forward a year….this month our newly formed Daybreak Primary PTO is hosting its first school event - a Family Fun Night on Tuesday, May 14th. We are so grateful for the families who have been partnering with the school to kick-off this first year of PTO and to plan and fundraise to support our school community. If you’re interested in learning more about how to get involved, the PTO has monthly general membership meetings and looks forward to welcoming you!
As you know, our Grades 1-4 students completed their spring round of i-Ready testing last month (we complete these diagnostic assessments each fall, winter, and spring). We have been pleased to see the progress our students are making. Thank you for all the support you provide at home!
Over these next two months, our PurposeFull People curriculum at each grade level will focus on courage and creativity. As you guide and support your children at home, you may find the way we’re defining these traits at school helpful to you. Here’s how we’re talking about each.
Courage: choosing what is helpful, right, and kind - even when it’s hard or scary
Creativity: using your imagination to create something new or solve a problem
We look forward to exploring, recognizing, and celebrating these important character traits over these coming weeks!
It’s been a couple months since we shared with families an update on attendance, one of our school improvement goals this year. Though we’ve been pretty consistent with attendance so far this year, last week we saw a dip in our average weekly attendance, dropping down to an average of 85 percent of students in school each day. This was a bit lower than the approximately 90 percent rate we’ve been seeing throughout most of the year. If your family needs any support with school attendance or timely arrival to school, please reach out to us and we can discuss to see if there are any ways we can help.
Because of how busy the end of the school year often feels and how important planning for your family can be, we’ve extended our list of dates below to include May and June dates so you can see them all together. Remember that our district calendar was updated earlier in the month to reflect the changes needed as a result of snow closure days earlier in the year. For complete information, please visit the academic calendar page on our district website.
Thanks, as always, for your continued partnership!
Go Dragons!

Joe Manning, Assistant Principal

Teacher appreciation week to be held May 6-10
We look forward to celebrating our wonderful teachers from May 6 through May 10 as part of National Teacher Appreciation Week. Established in 1984, Teacher Appreciation Week is set aside as a special time to honor our teachers who lend their passion and skills to educating our students and partnering with our families. If you wish, feel free to have your child or family offer a sign of appreciation (a note, card, kind words, etc.) for our teachers during this special week. The Daybreak Primary PTO is helping to coordinate ways to celebrate teachers, if you’d like to choose a day or two:
Monday: Bring a note or thank you card for your teacher
Tuesday: Bring or draw flowers for your teacher
Wednesday: Draw or paint a picture of your teacher
Thursday: Wear your teacher’s favorite colors
Friday: Bring your teacher a treat or snack

During regularly scheduled student lunch times on Wednesday, May 22nd, Nutrition Services will be holding a special barbecue lunch on the Daybreak campus. Parents/guardians are welcome to come purchase and enjoy lunch this day with their student(s). If attending, please come by the office to check in prior to going to the cafeteria. Prepayment on your student’s meal account for anyone purchasing a meal is strongly encouraged. See this handout with more details on menu and meal costs.
Daybreak participates in monthly safety drills
Our school participates in monthly safety drills, including fire, earthquake, lockdown, and shelter-in-place. Each drill provides us the opportunity to practice procedures, assess problems that develop, and respond in ways that improve our procedures.
In April, we practiced our lockdown procedures. For May, we had a small group of safety committee members do a campus mapping drill, walking the campus to locate important areas, such as gas, electric, and water shut-offs, to prepare for any emergency that would require us to access and turn off these resources.
Preparing our students and staff for in-building safety responses and emergencies is a priority. More information about Battle Ground Public Schools’ emergency practices is on the district website.
Annual fourth grade Talent Show prep currently underway
Preparation for our fourth grade talent show has begun, and information for our fourth grade students is available from their fourth grade teachers. Auditions will be held later in May with the Talent Show performance on our last day of school - Friday, June 14th. Interested fourth grade students can get more information from their fourth grade teachers.
Dragon Wagon to return for Summer 2024
Throughout the summer, our Dragon Wagon, in coordination with Community Education and the local parks department, will make weekly visits to our school neighborhood as part of the Battle Grounds Parks activities program. The Dragon Wagon gives students the opportunity to check out books. You’ll be able to find the Dragon Wagon at Florence Robison Park (1901 NW 9th St.) on Thursdays from 10:00 to 12:00, starting at the end of June and going through mid-August.
Check the lost and found before the end of the year
It’s that time of the year again — as we move into the final month and a half of the school year — to check the lost and found for missing items. Items that remain after the last day of school will be donated to our district’s Family & Community Resource Center.
Enroll now for kindergarten next fall
Any child who will be 5 years old by Aug. 31, 2024, is eligible to enroll in kindergarten this fall. Enroll now to make sure your child can attend our kindergarten orientation in the spring.
Daybreak Primary kindergarten orientation night to be held May 21
We invite all kindergarten students who have been enrolled for next school year and their families to attend our kindergarten orientation night on Tuesday, May 21st, beginning at 5 pm. Teachers and staff will be available to show our school, brief activities will be prepared for students in our kindergarten classrooms, and families will have a chance to get questions answered. We look forward to seeing our future kindergarten Dragons!

Enroll in Fred Meyer Community Rewards to benefit Daybreak schools
We want to pass along an easy way to raise funds for Daybreak Schools. Fred Meyer, according to its website, is committed to community engagement, positive social impact, and charitable giving. A specific goal is to partner with the neighborhoods the company serves and to help community members live healthier lives. One of the ways in which they do this is through their Fred Meyer Community Rewards program. This program makes fundraising easy by donating to local organizations based on the shopping people do every day. Once you link your card to an organization, all you have to do is shop at Fred Meyer and swipe your Shopper’s Card or enter your shopper number. For directions, please visit the Fred Meyer Community Rewards page. When you select your organization, be sure to select “Daybreak Middle School.” All money the rewards program generates for Daybreak will be split evenly between Daybreak Primary and Daybreak Middle Schools.
