Dear Parents/Carers,
We have had an absolutely smashing Career’s Week this week and were lucky enough to have quite a diverse range of people in to talk to the pupils.
On Monday, we were visited by Moira from Renewi, Wakefield who came to speak about sustainability, recycling and climate change. She went into a few classes and then met with myself and the Eco Team. She has invited the team to the recycling plant and we will definitely take her up on this offer next year.
On the same day, we had Eric visit us from Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Eric spoke to the pupils about the work of the charity and the different job roles involved. They were very interested in the helicopters and how they are used to get to some extreme places. This is an amazing charity who need to raise £19,000 a day to put the helicopters in the sky. If you would like to recycle clothing, there are various collection points around Wakefield - Morrisons: Pontefract, The Travellers Rest, Featherstone, The Railway Inn, Mill Dam Lane, East Hardwick Village Hall and Asda: Glasshoughton
This week, a selection of Year 6 pupils went to the West Yorkshire Cricket Championships and won two of the games. This is another excellent sporting achievement. I am always very proud of the maturity and sportsmanship displayed by our pupils when they play against schools within our Trust and beyond. Well done everyone!
On Wednesday, Mrs Morris, one of our wonderful parents came in to talk to the pupils about her work as a consultant in a local hospital. Four were chosen to be assessed for various simple things – such as balance and co-ordination. The pupils found this very funny but were very inspired and many would like to pursue this career in the future.
On Thursday, there was huge excitement as we had a Police riot van at school. Again, a wonderful parent and his colleague came to talk to us about their careers in the force. There were many questions asked but the real interest was in the equipment carried by the officers, hearing the sirens on the riot van and the prisoner cage in the back! This was an excellent morning.
In the afternoon, Year 5 and 6 had a Performing Arts workshop with yet another parent who did various drama activities linked to their canon text, Cogheart. We have many talented actors in Upper Key Stage Two who shared how they are now driven to go to drama school even more.
On Friday morning, we had a visit from a pilot. John has visited us before and currently works for Jet2. He shared some amazing stories with the pupils and spoke about the intense training pilots must have. The pupils were fascinated!
On Friday afternoon, we had a visit from a florist who came to do a small workshop with eight pupils across Year 3 and 4. The pupils made some wonderful arrangements and were sent home with a small gift. Paula has her own florist shop named, Florence and Wild based in Wakefield. The quality of her products are beautiful. If you require further information, please visit her website florenceandwild.co.uk.
A Few Memorable Moments
On Thursday, myself and Miss Howard auditioned pupils in preparation for the Larks Hills Got Talent Show to be held in the evening of Tuesday 9th July. We were blown away by the talent on show and cannot wait for this event. The pupils were confident and came well-prepared. We will be contacting parents in the next few days with further show details.
