Scott E. Miller, Superintendent
Issue 14 - November 18, 2019
Greetings SCH Family,
Tomorrow, November 19, marks the Red for Ed rally in Indianapolis where educators statewide will be reminding the legislators who they work for and who they should be listening to in regards to education. I will be down joining them and if you’re interested to learn more, you can see my comments about the importance of the event here. I’ve also attached the legislative priorities for this session from our State Superintendent, Dr. Jennifer McCormick.
Even if you can’t make it down to Indy, I encourage you to all wear a red shirt tomorrow as a sign of solidarity and be vocal with your friends and family as to the need for education policy to change in Indiana.
See you at the Capitol!

Area Career Center
Hammond students will have the opportunity to experience authentic hands-on exposure to 14 trades and apprenticeship programs. The 3rd Annual Construction & Trades Show will be featured at Lake County Fair Grounds in the Industrial building on Tuesday, November 19th from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. It is the perfect setting to display actual trades equipment and tools. I’ve had the opportunity to witness prior shows and was astonished at the rich learning experience for students.
The Indiana Department of Education and Governors Workforce Cabinet, Indiana is poised to increase focus on careers in trade and other vocations – besides an emphasis on traditional college pathways. Our Area Career Center is an excellent model for exactly that kind of curriculum.
ACCU Olympic Games
The Area Career Center University studies a different interdisciplinary unit each fall. In the past, we have read Elie Weisel’s “Night in a Day”, the Day of the Dead, water use and conservation, and the Circus. To celebrate next summer’s Tokyo Olympics, we studied all things Olympic this year. Students were assigned to one of six groups representing the last six summer Olympic games. All students participated in at least one “athletic” competition, including land skiing (pictured), bean bag toss, javelin throw, and “dizzy izzy”. The culmination was an academic competition held at the Closing Ceremonies. Student received bronze, silver, and gold medals on the medal stand to celebrate their accomplishments. The entire unit was a resounding success and the closing ceremonies were terrific fun.

Head Start
Congratulations to the 10 Head Start parents that attended all five Parents as Subs training sessions!!! They are ready to take the next step toward becoming Head Start Teacher Assistant substitutes. Each parent must now complete two classroom observations. The first observation includes a classroom Scavenger Hunt to help each of them become more familiar with the classrooms. Items on the Scavenger Hunt include finding/identifying - where to go for a fire drill, where the lesson plan is posted, what is something the teacher said to acknowledge students’ efforts, etc. After the two observations are completed, the parent is potentially eligible for recommendation to become a Teacher Assistant substitute and will go through the HR process for substitute hiring.
Special Education
COFFEE, TEA AND LIFE SKILLS!
The Coffee Cart Program is a student run business that teaches vocation, money, and customer service skills to special needs students. The students take orders from the staff and are responsible for writing down, filling and delivering the food or beverage. The menu items include coffee, tea, hot chocolate, soda, and baked goods. The students and staff engage in conversation that promote social skills and money is exchanged for the goods. Both the students and staff really enjoy this program so it is a win-win for everyone. Kudos to the ACC and to the special instructor Megan Virosztko for facilitating this innovative program that teaches important life skills.
