-From The Desk of the Superintendent-
Dear ALCS families,
We appreciate your patience and understanding with regards to decisions to close schools due to the weather. We understand these decisions have an impact on families and our community. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Please know that we constantly monitor the weather and road conditions. Often these factors change rapidly and we have to make quick, last minute decisions.
There are often occasions when Avon Lake receives exceptionally heavy nighttime snow, ice or dangerous wind chills that continue into the morning creating hazardous conditions that interfere with school buses transporting students, parents driving their students to school, students walking or driving to school, and employees being able to get to school on time.
We have been discussing the possible implementation of a delayed start when weather or road conditions are severe in the early morning hours, but show improvement later. Our district has not operated in the past with the delayed start option and there are several factors to consider when opting for a delayed start vs. closing schools for the entire day. If we implemented a two-hour delay, scenarios would include no AM Kindergarten/Preschool, no effect on dismissal times, and school day schedules would be adjusted to accommodate for the shorter school day.
We would like your feedback regarding implementing a delayed start policy in our district.
Please take a moment to complete a brief survey regarding a delayed start or closing school for the entire day (click here). Thank you for your continued support of our schools. Please stay safe.
Sincerely,
Joelle Magyar
