Creating Sequencing Questions
Tech Tuesday, March 7, 2017
Many of today's online assessments use more advanced types of questioning such as drag and drop and putting items in order. Google Forms is not able to provide these type of questions as of yet but.... there is a way to set up ordering and sequencing types of questions. Let's look now at a quick "How-To" on setting up a formative assessment that you can use in your classroom.
Overview
Let's try to create a sequencing form. I will use the Frog Life Cycle. To create this type of a question with Google Forms, we will need to complete the following four steps:
- Create the Google Form (Quiz)
- Add directions for the online formative assessment.
- Add a separate question for each item to be put in order.
- Set the option to shuffle the form questions.

Make Sequencing Questions with Google Forms
Step 1 - Create a Google Form Quiz
Begin by creating the Form as usual. Make sure to turn on the "Quizzes" settings on the Google Form.
- Click the setting icon in the top-right corner and then choose the "Quizzes" tab.
- Click on for "Make this a quiz".
- Set the rest of the quiz options to your preferences.
Step 2 - Add instructions for the online formative assessment.
Since the sequencing question will actually be multiple individual questions, you will need to add your directions separately. You can do this in two ways:
- Form Description - Type the directions into the Form Description area which is below the Form Title.
OR
- New Title and Description - Add a new title and description to include the directions. To do this, click on the "Add title and description" button by clicking on the double "T" on the side menu. For the title, you could enter "Directions" and for the description, you could type in the directions.
Step 3 Add a separate question for each item to be put in order.
Now comes the work, time to create a separate question for each item. When setting these portion up on the quiz, put items in the correct order. At the end, the shuffle button will be selected.
- Click the "Add question" button (plus "+" sign in it).
- Choose "Dropdown" for the type of question.
- Type in the question, which will be the first item to be sorted.
- For the possible answers, enter the possible choices. Example: eggs, tadpole, froglet and adult frog.
- Continue to click to add additional questions until all items are in order. If an image is needed, click on the image button to the right of the question title.
**Be sure to click the "Answer Key" link to select the correct answer and set the point value.
Step 4 - Set the option to shuffle the form questions.
Once everything has been set up, it is time to shuffle the order.
- Click the settings icon in the top-right corner and then choose the "Presentation" tab.
- Check the box for "Shuffle question order".
- You can also add in a confirmation response
- Click "Save"
**For more than one sequencing problem, add in additional sections by clicking the "Add section" button in the side toolbar.
