Dear Parents
Welcome back to the final term of the 2024 school year.
This term will end with the distribution of Semester Two reports. The Education Department has introduced changes to the format and content of the reports. The primary school reports will now look the same as Semester One but will now only have a general comment, there will be no subject specific comments. Primary staff will contact parents if any specific concerns are identified to discuss one on one. The secondary reports will not change until Semester One in 2025.
Our school continues to grow. Builders are currently completing the installation of a new secondary classroom ready for the 2025 school year to accommodate increasing enrolments. The secondary science room is also undergoing a major refurbishment which should be finished by the end of the school year.
This term we have, following discussion with students, introduced hats as compulsory wear for secondary students for all outdoor activities. The students have been fantastic and clearly understand the health benefits of hats supporting this new initiative. We now have all students at school wearing hats outdoors.
Last year we were successful in applying for a crosswalk across Bashford Street (Indian Ocean Drive) with a crosswalk guard. On October 31, 2023, we met with the Shire of Dandaragan, Children’s Crossing Unit and Main Roads at the site of the crosswalk, to determine the exact site and work required. The meeting was positive with particularly strong support from the Shire of Dandaragan. In terms of construction the work required is not major so naively I thought all would be done to commence this school year. I cannot believe the time delay. As at the time of writing this newsletter, we still do not have any update on the project which is, to be polite, disappointing. A hazard has been identified and, in my mind, I would have expected some urgency in building the crosswalk to reduce the hazard. A School Board member did contact our local member for an update, but the reply contained no specific information. In the meantime, please be careful when crossing Bashford Street.
On a positive note, our ATAR Year 12 students have commenced their exams this week. We do wish them all the best and look forward to seeing some great results.
If you do have any queries regarding your child’s education, please do not hesitate to contact the class teacher to arrange a suitable time to meet.

VECTOR RURAL YOUTH AMBASSADOR FORUM
Week 3 of term, 3 of our Year 10 students, along with Mr Main, got the opportunity to attend the VECTOR Rural Youth Ambassador Forum, with 9 other schools across the Midwest.
VECTOR is a program designed to help rural communities connect and collaborate with one another so that their students can get a wider variety of learning experiences. It was established by a group of young students, just like our own, who had a similar vision two years ago.
During the 3 days we connected with our peers to overcome challenges and experiences we each face over our communities and schools. We touched on topics such as communication through SIDE, our health and wellbeing, combining schools' resources to create more subject opportunities, and helping our teachers and staff get better training to help the young people in their schools. We spoke with Paul Mathews, Principal of SIDE, to allow him to see our challenges and ideas, and Tayla Roberts who attended the previous VECTOR forum, so she could share her past experiences in a rural community in South Australia. We discovered a small town, Nathalia, who had 4 schools, 2 primary and 2 high schools, and they combined their resources like teachers and programs to offer their students a massive selection of 52 different subjects to choose from. Even more fascinating, was that 2 of the schools were private and the other 2 were public. To see how they work together was incredible.
All 40 students came together, and came up with a list of ideas we would like to see in the future, and presented them to some teachers and principals across the schools. We found this experience to be life changing, and eye-opening opportunity to see what we could create in the upcoming future. It allowed us to get out of our comfort zones and work with people we probably would've never met, without this program.
We are very thankful to Phil Brown and Mike Henderson who ran and organised this event for us, along with Midwest Education Office for allowing us to have this opportunity.

6 Tips for Managing Group Chats
When it comes to Group Chats, parents and carers need to remain vigilant as often these conversations can spiral into drama, nasty behaviours, exclusion (someone being "outsided") and bullying

YEAR 1 NEWSLETTER
In History this semester, the Year Ones have been learning about Australian Indigenous Culture. They specifically looked at traditional and modern families, the Kinship system and how the relationships in Indigenous families work together for the whole group. The students were very interested in bush tucker and the tools used to collect it. We were very fortunate when Mrs Rivers brought in some artifacts to show us. Her grandson, Terry, spoke to the class about the artifacts and explained what their uses were.

Year 5 Science Incursion
Department of Biodiversity Conversation and Attractions
Thanks so much to Ash and Lochie from Department of Biodiversity Conversation and Attractions (DBCA) for an informative visit. We all found it so interesting, and really appreciated their time and knowledge of the Jurien Bay flora and fauna. Thanks to Emma Rowe for organising this session.
The Year 5 students have been super focused on their follow up activity - creating their own animal with 4 adaptations.
Close ups with some of our local animals was fascinating!
NEW SECONDARY BUILDING
The Education Department recently delivered and installed a new classroom to cater for our continued growth in secondary. The new room will be fully finished and functional to commence the 2025 school year.
PBS
The school's reward system was developed by the PBS team in 2021, to ensure a consistent approach across the school. There are 2 types of rewards given to students; faction points for following any of the school values at any time, and there are fast and frequent rewards that are given out regularly for following the fortnight behaviour focus. All children should be receiving a minimum of 1 reward per day. At the end of each fortnight, there are 6 random winners drawn from the tickets by the faction captains. There is 1 primary and 1 secondary reward for each faction. Faction points are then tallied and the faction with the most points, flies their faction flag outside of the canteen for the next fortnight.
